    Windows 7 Computer Restarting

My parents computer (about 9 months old) will not shut down. It is a Dell Inspiron 570 desktop with Windows 7. When the user attempts to shut down by going to start - shutdown, the computer goes through the process to shutdown and does, but then it automatically restarts every single time!

Any ideas as to what might be causing this? I did a google search and did not find too much that was helpful. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

    Thanks!

You mean its a continuous restart loop? Once it gets to the windows startup screen it restarts, correct?

I apologize for not being clear. The computer runs exactly as it is supposed to run other than the shutdown function. Once the computer boots up it is normal. Basically the computer is always on because when attempting to shutdown, it does shutdown like normal, then about 1 to 2 seconds after it shuts down, it restarts itself. It will not remain off.

Not sure I made this any more clear...I think I made this more confusing?

You hit shutdown and the computer shuts down, but then pops back on.

Correct. Thanks for helping me get to a simple explanation. LOL. Any thoughts as to why this might be happening?

    Re: Windows 7 Computer Restarting

Have you tried a force shut down (press & hold the power button for 5 seconds)? If that works, try to restate the machine and see if the problem is resolved......it's amazing how often that will remedy little glitches like the one you're having.

And, I'm not trying to be a smart ***, but make sure that the "restart" option from the drop down menu is not selected when shutting down. Not trying to be insulting, but sometimes a simple thing like that is over looked.

just pull the power cord out of the back of the tower and just try and let the computer restart then haha. in all seriousness this will work but make sure to close everything before you do it so no files or anything get lost or damaged

Not sure, apparently they arent the only ones.

Dell Inspiron 570 will not stay off

Something is triggering the power on. Could be something in the bios. Could be something in windows. One thing you could try is a bios upgrade if there is one available on dells website.

I have not tried this but will. I am assuming "restate" meant restart? Not trying to be a smartass, but if you do mean "restate" I am not sure what that means?

Editing the registry? Cleaning the power source? Updating the BIOS? Making changes in Device Manager?

There's lots of stuff in that thread to try.

I will try to update the BIOS. This is strange...hoping to avoid a phone call to Dell!

I did not try everything, sorry. I tried the part (last post) that the poster said worked.

Who knows if any of that will work, but it's worth a shot.
