DirecTV - Deals for Existing Customers?

I have been a long time DirecTV customer. I am finally getting around to adding HD. Is there any chance DirecTV would give me a free HD DVR, discount on my package for 12 months, and free HD like Dish Network would if I call and threaten to leave? Just wondering if anyone else here has tried that with any success? Otherwise I am thinking about switching to Dish Network. The nice thing about Dish Network is some of their receivers allow provide service to two TV's (second TV in SD only) without an additional fee. I hate the hassle of changing and learning new channel numbers, but will have to have someone out to upgrade our dish and receivers anyway. I also realize that Dish Network does not carry FCS where a lot of our games were on.

Oh ya, if you have been there long enough you can a lot of discounts. We get pretty much everything free now since we have been a customer for over 10 years. Or pretty darn close to free. My dad just got a free HD DVR last week.

Thanks. I'd like to see if they would basically match what I could get through Dish Network, which is their America's Top 250 for $49.99 for 12 months, free HD DVR any other free receivers I need, free HD service.

Tell them you are looking to change to Dish. We received $10 off per month for 2 years, free DVR receiver, installation and 3 mo. of Starz.

Re: DirecTV - Deals for Existing Customers?

Good luck, my parents had been longtime DirecTV customers and my dad called them several times trying to get a new deal with no luck so he switched to Dish. This included threatening to cancel before he made the switch and only after he signed his Dish deal did they even budge and by then it was too late.

Just cancel you will get all kinds of deals thrown at you to stay. That is the best way to get good deals from Direct. I went to Dish 6 months ago and Direct calls me weekly with great deals to change. When I was with Direct I tired to get reduced rates and them to send me a new box after mine got fried but they said no. But when I canceled that all changed.

Re: DirecTV - Deals for Existing Customers?

Well, I called DirecTV and asked them to match Dish Network's deal. They said they couldn't, but let me talk to someone in their retention/cancellation area. I didn't even have to hardly ask for it... they gave me my current package (Choice Xtra) a new HD DVR, a second new HD receiver, and said my monthly bill would only be $50 a month. I don't believe that would include the $10 a month for HD, but they said I could call back later after the HD is activated and have that waved since I am bundled with Qwest DSL (or if you auto-pay). I am a little leery that I won't end up getting that deal, but we'll see. I asked several times to make sure I understood correctly. I've been out of contract for several years, haven't upgraded equipment for awhile, and have been a long-time customer without any late payments, so that probably helped. I was sort of surprised it would be that easy.

Don't ask for deals right away. Just call in and tell them that you'd like to cancel. They will transfer you to the department that can get you the deals. Make sure you ask for everything you want because once they have you in the 2 year commitment you're not going to get anything free.

Re: DirecTV - Deals for Existing Customers?

Well, I thought I did pretty well with what I got. Maybe I was too easy on them, but its a better deal than what I would have got signing up new with dish network. I tried getting another free hd receiver, but was told that was all they could do at this point. She said to call back in six months and I could probably get another free HD receiver. Whether to believe that or not is another story.

Re: DirecTV - Deals for Existing Customers?

I've been thinking about calling directv soon as I'm also out of contract (been with directv about 4 years). Anybody have any tips on what I should try to get out of them? I already have an hd receiver but I don't think its the most current model. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Btw, is the directv protection plan worth having?
