    Classy Iowa Fans

I guess, I really never believed those stories about overzealous fans and the rudeness that one encounters at these instate rivalry games until tonight. I recently moved back to Iowa, and decided to go to the game tonight with a good friend of mine. We had great seats and were enjoying the game. I was cheering pretty good, the high-fiving and occasional yell for Scotty C, but pride myself on never using profanities or derogatory comments. Well, midway through the second half that must have gotten too much for some Hawk fans as we began to get plunked by change. Not a big deal, just a few nickels to the back of the head, but none-the-less disappointing. I have lived in two different states, and travelled all over, always telling everyone how respectful and kind Iowans are. I still believe this, but I am a little embarrassed of my fellow Iowans. I just can't believe anyone would get so worked up that they wold throw something at an opposing fan.

    Way to stay Classy Hawks

    Re: Classy Iowa Fans

I ran into several Hawks at Steak and Shake as well as the game and didn't have a single problem. There were the jokes about whether we get service, and that I wore the wrong colors for Blackout Night, but that's just fun stuff.

Got some glares here and there, but I expect that walking into their house. I understand that I'm really not welcome there.

Throwing stuff, of course, is out of line.

Eat crow Iowa hope you lose in your bowl game!!! I dealt with the same thing a few years ago just dumb.

    Re: Classy Iowa Fans

I wish it had been nickels when I went to Kinnick back in 2002 after the Seneca comeback. As we were walking out of that game, it was a night game, and many had been drinking for way too long. I got a full/unopened can of beer to the shoulder/neck. It hurt like a son of *****.

I was with my dad, who happens to be a lifelong Hawkeye. He was ******, he had never witnessed anything like that at their games. He wanted to go after the guy that threw it at me, but I said let's just keep moving and get the hell out of here. I can't stand going over there for any type of game...yet I still do it to hang out with my dad and have some good banter back and forth.

Everybody has their bad apples. I've seen change thrown onto the court in Hilton before. Certainly not representative of the entire fanbases.

    Re: Classy Iowa Fans

No problems here. I found some good seats in Season Ticket land. Had all my Cyclone gear on and talked to an older couple the whole night. I received no grief walking around the arena as well, kind of shell shocked. The couple mentioned their displeasure with how the atmosphere still isn't what it was in the 90's.

My sister also had beer thrown at her after an ISU win at Kinnick. Maybe it's just the men's sports that bring out the douchiness in Squawk fans because I went to the ISU/East Coralville Community College women's game Thursday night and thought the home fans were a class act. I can't say the same for the announcer, though.

This. Currently on the list of things I've seen thrown are batteries and full cans of beer. I'm sure that now that I'll be going to the games just as a fan and not as a member of the band that the list will expand quickly.

The best thing to do is say "cool" and start sticking the change in your pocket. If it isn't ******* you off and they think you are profiting from it they will lose interest.

    Crowd Was Generally Good

I thought Hawk fans were pretty cordial last night. But I always feel that when I am at an opponents arena/field that I need to pull back my cheering a little bit.

My only complaint would be the Iowa student section. IMO it is in poor taste to chant that an opposing player suxx. If your going to get on an opposing player - get a little creative.

I didn't have any problems with the fans. The students chanting about certain players sucking was a little classless. Especially when that player isn't even in the game.

    Re: Crowd Was Generally Good

Having grown up in the Hawks' backyard, my two cents is that UI fans who actually attended the university, are donating money to the university, or have some sense of ownership in the university on a continuing basis are fine. For example, if you go tailgating in the donor lots of Kinnick, you might get some good natured kidding, but no worse than you would get at JTS. However, when you go the tailgating lots with the trailer trash from Riverside, you aren't going to have a good experience.

The problem with UI is that 75% of their fans are idiots who (1) have no continuing connection to the university, (2) are UNI alums, or (3) have no idea generally how to behave as an adult. Therefore, it's kinda hard to avoid the overall perception that the entire fanbase is full of *******.
