    Internet Speed Question

My wife works full-time from home and we've been having a lot of issues with our internet going out. A Mediacom tech suggested we upgrade to a business account so we could always get same day service when we have service interruptions.

I can keep the same speed I have now (10mbps down/1mbps up) for $10 more per month, or I can downgrade my speed to 5mbps down/1mbps up and keep the same price I have now.

I know just for web surfing and stuff 5mbps will be fine, but I also like to occasionally stream Netflix and I've got my Dish Network boxes and Wii connected to the net. I don't care about streaming in HD, I usually only stream when I literally have nothing else to watch. But will 5mbps be fast enough even for SD streaming? Opinions?

That sounds like a sucky way to handle a service disruption problem.

I just upgraded from a 1.5 DSL fiber connection and streaming was fine. No hd from netflix, but sd was ok.

I had some issues a while back, not Mediacom but a new modem took care of them. Maybe a place to start.

Mediacom rep: Our service is down 75% of the time. If you want to knock that down to 50% of the time, it's going to cost you an extra $10/month.

Me: Do you happen to have the number for Qwest handy?

I second the checking of your modem before doing anything else.

    Re: Internet Speed Question

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried a different modem and it made no difference. Their service just sucks. We actually had to resort to filing a complaint with the BBB. Mediacom's response was that recent storms in our area have been causing the outages. Uh-huh, right. Everyday for four years. Then they threw in at the end that we were using a consumer product for business purposes by accessing our company LANs and technically we should have a business account and the benefit to us would be faster response times for outages. My plan was to follow their advice and continue to document how ****** their service/response times are.

No way I would change my plan for them when it's their problem your internet is going out. It may just be me, but there is no way I would put up with them trying to put the screws to you.

I know. But I've ******* and moaned and nothing has changed. At this point I feel the only thing I can do is follow their suggestion and then raise holy hell when that doesn't work either.

I'm open to any and all suggestions on how to further my complaint, but with Mediacom complaining just gets you nowhere. They don't care.

Unfortunately there are no other providers in my area so Qwest is not an option. I'd switch in a heartbeat if we had another option.

    Re: Internet Speed Question

Mediacom has given you crappy service for the past 4 years, so you are thinking about spending more money with them? The extra money isn't for a better connection, which is your problem, but so they will respond faster when you have a problem...

If you can get mediacom cable, I have to believe there is a phone company that you can get DSL from. Also, threatening to cancel can often get them to actually fix the problem.

Nope, no DSL available in our neighborhood, which is mind-blowing considering it is a fairly large and affluent development. With their pricing they could swoop in and literally have every customer in our neighborhood. It's business decisions like this that I'm sure are partly responsible for Qwest teetering on the edge of financial ruin for the past several years.

And I don't want to threaten to cancel because they will call my bluff and just say OK.
