    Malzahn to Vandy?

Per footballscoop.com, Malzahn has been offered the job.

Vandy: Our sources tell us Gus Malzahn has been offered the job. If he does not accept it, we are told that Maryland's James Franklin will be the guy.
While it may not be this year, its only a matter of time before Malzahn gets a HC job. Then we will see what the defensive mind, Gene Chizik, can do without his offensive genius to cover his ***.

I would think he could get a better gig than that.

I'm surprised he hasn't been the leading candidate for Miami.

I could be wrong, but I think Malzahn has been the main factor in Auburn's success this year, along with Cam "didn't know that daddy sold me" Newton, with greasy Gene coming in a distant third.

Vandy is a sleeping giant. (This is how you justify unusual moves.)

Remmeber that Gene to ISU raised some eyebrows.

    Re: Malzahn to Vandy?

Malzahn is only a handful of years removed from being a high school coach. The only reason he got a job on the staff at Arkansas was because all of the money people were scared that if they didn't offer him a job that Mitch Mustain would get away. Ironically he did anyway. Obviously, he looks pretty good this year but he has the best QB money could buy. I think he'd be better suited to coach in a conference other than the SEC.

    Re: Malzahn to Vandy?

If I were Malzahn, I would hold out for a better job. 1-2 more years as an OC and he'll be able to get a much better job. Tennessee and/or Georgia could come open. LSU keeps doing well, but as soon as Les Miles struggles a bit, they would probably love to show him the door. Much of the ACC would be better than Vandy, and on and on.....

    Re: Malzahn to Vandy?

Gus brought five players to Arkansas, Mustain just being the best known. I would expect he wants out before the hammer drops on Auburn, but I think he would like to hold out until Petrino leaves Arkansas.

If the hammer ever does drop. I still cannot believe that NCAA ruling.

I think McFarland could step in where Malzahn left off.

I wouldn't count on Petrino leaving anytime soon. He's improved their team in his short time there and Arkansas fans are very happy. With the way he left Atlanta, I think some of his luster has worn off, so I don't think as many teams will come after him.

It will be interesting to see how he does after his QB leaves. He got a little lucky with him transferring, but I think Petrino's recruiting has been pretty good anyway. Also, he's built up a pretty good offensive reputation and I would think lots of good skill players would see that he's had a great track record with QB's, WR's, etc.

So what's the deal with Vandy anyway? Are their academic standards to high to compete in the SEC? They certainly have the money.

Let's be honest here - most people would view the ISU job and the Vandy job similarly. So following the Chizik blueprint, you take the extra money you're going to get as HC at Vandy, spend a couple years running the program into the ground trying to figure out how the hell you do the job of head coach while knowing that no one will blame you if you can't succeed at a such a terrible football school. Then when Arkansas or LSU comes calling you can tell them you've learned from your experience destroying the Vandy program and won't make those same rookie mistakes at their school.
