    Farley to Ball State?

Footballscoop.com is reporting Ball State has interest in UNI coach Mark Farley. Interesting...I've always heard he has wanted to move up to D1 but hasn't had the chance yet.

Personally, I think UNI is better than the Ball State job. About the only step up is because BSU is Div. 1.

It's definitely a step up, and the kind of move he needs to make if he ever wants to have an opportunity to lead a BCS program.

Agreed, it's definitely a step up. Lots of good coaches have started off in the MAC. People forget only 7 or 8 years ago Urban Meyer was the head coach of Bowling Green.

Pinkel was @ Toledo, Jerry Kill just got a BCS gig from NIU, the late Terry Hoeppner went from Miami to Indiana, and there are a lot of other guys that I'm sure I could come up with if I thought about it, so there's a long precedent of MAC success leading to a BCS gig.

In a vacuum UNI might have some better qualities, but if he was offered, he'd be foolish not to take it. Unless his goal is to build his alma materr into the best program it can be.

I'm okay with UNI losing an excellent coach, given how often we're playing them in the coming years.

    Re: Farley to Ball State?

Perfect step up for him. A chance to prove he can coach in a bigger conference. A chance to show he can recruit at that level. Plus, he's not going to a totally different part of the country...he's still basically in the midwest, so he can recruit IA, MN, WI, IL...players he can relate to. He would have to prove he can hire solid recruiters that can bring FL and TX players to a MAC team.

No way. Not BG.You jmust be kidding. A ex-Bowling Green coach takes the NC twice? Now that is real humping to make it work. Who says that BG does not have potential hotbed for coaches? Did not the Stoops and Pelinis come from the same general area? Next thing we might hit the Butler bball coach hit the bigtime.

    Re: Farley to Ball State?

It would be a tough loss for UNI. He's a heck of a coach. I think he probably has what it take to make it at the next level.

Money talks and his kids are nearly grown now, so not a bad time to jump up if that's what he wants to do. I'm a little suprised nobody came after him stronger a couple years ago.

I agree with this. I guess the decision comes down to is Farley content with his $175,000 job and the job security that comes with it or does he want to try Ball State where he could be fired in 3-4 years or possible get a BCS job? Tough call.

This is a really interesting article Keeler did today.

Keeler: Mark Farley would be wise to stay put | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

I didn't realize Jacobson is making more than Farley now. How do they support that long term? Football doesn't seem to pay the freight at UNI, but does basketball?

Northern Illinois would be a great move if the rumor is true.

Basketball is the only sport that comes close to turning a profit at UNI. Football doesn't come close ($1 million income v. $2.5 million expenses). See here: Iowa, ISU, UNI athletic budgets report | Eastern Iowa News Now

    Re: Farley to Ball State?

NIU would be a much better gig for Farley due to the fact they have quite a bit of talent already on the team. Farley has already accomplished a lot at UNI and I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him move on.

Dannen spoke about it right after the NCAAs last year. Some donor stepped up to fund the pay raise, so it's sustainable that way.

Farley has done a great job with Div 1 rejects. He has gotten a steady stream of guys kicked off of other teams for various reasons.

I understand that Farley may be happy in Cedar Falls, but that's pretty foolish to think that UNI is even comparable with Ball St.
