    Anderson's defense

I have one small complaint about Jake. I noticed this again in the SEMO game and itís something that has happened several times this season, where he will leave his man to play a little help defense and then when the kickout goes to his guy heís not getting back there in enough time to defend the 3. Has anybody else noticed this? Many of the teams weíve played canít take advantage of this but pretty soon they will be able to. Probably the only thing that bothers me about his game, and itís probably just a result of how hard he plays.

Donít get me wrong, I love the kid, but I hope he doesnít do that against Iowa because I think we can play good enough post defense to go one on one against Cole, Basabe, and Brommer. I know Gatens has been cold this year after the injury but heís definitely capable of a big game and May has done great from three.

Yeah, he's a step slow sometimes in that recovery. Well, pretty often, actually.

    Re: Anderson's defense

I noticed that the guards were doing this against UNI. I don't know if it is part of the game plan but I was yelling at the TV that we don't need to double team O'Rear in the post. We should have taken our chances playing them straight up. There isn't a player on that team that can get their own shot but we would double team O'Rear which allowed him to kick out for an open shot.

I think our bigs need to do a better job denying the ball to the post....that would solve a good portion of the problem right there.

You are right. I noticed that Godfrey and Railey are our best post defenders and they are true freshman...That's are problem right there and will be for the rest of the year.

    Re: Anderson's defense

Jake has a tendency to play out of control. He plays so hard it is difficult to tell him to slow down. His help defense does need some work. He is a Mike Taylor type where you have to take the good with the bad. Fortunately, he does far more good than bad.

    Re: Anderson's defense

I disagree with pretty much everything in this post. Jake is our best defender, he has all but shut down his player (which happens to be the opponents best player) in every game. Our bigs obviously aren't bigs and we need to double down, this has caused a lot of turnovers. We will get burned on it once in awhile but I'll take a 20ft shot over a layup, and the foul trouble we'd be in by leaving JVB, Godfrey, and Railey 1 on 1 with anybody.

I realize no one is putting the blame all on Jake its just what we have to work with this year. I almost think this year a zone may be warranted, it won't happen but I'd think it'd work. Something like a box and one leaving Jake on the ball.

I have yet to see Jake out of control, the kid goes full speed but never loses control, Bubu on the other hand is out of control, but draws the fouls to bail him out.

I just want them to play hard. That is refreshing.

He is in more control than Bubu, that is for sure. I wasn't speaking only of Jake's offense. There were a couple times against UNI that Jake was too agressive on the double team and either picked up a foul or didn't get back to his man in time. The way Jake handles the ball will lead to turnovers in conference play, but it will also lead to free throws and opportunities for his teammates.

    Re: Anderson's defense

Out of control? Are you talking about Bubu? Jake knows his game. I don't know why we are complaining about one of our best players.

He is working so hard to help others, its not his fault that he is sometime late to go back to his own guy. Give him a break!

He pretty much owned the paint. We needed to double team.
