    Big 12 becoming more stable...

Long, but excellent read on the now growing stability of the 6 power conferences...including the big 12.

This guy has had super articles on conference expansion in the last year.

    good read. long but interesting.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than selfish and worry about my liver."

    From the article:

While the Big 12 isn’t safe in a warm and fuzzy family way, it looks like it’s safe in a maximum security prison way. No one’s getting out of there even if they want to very badly.
That pretty much says it all.

Excellent read. Once the TV contract bid numbers come out in the spring, the Big 12 will be just fine.

The Big East is our best possible non Big XII option (We aren't going to the Big 10 or Pac 10), but I'd much rather stay in the Big XII if the option is there. More TV money, better recruits, and I'd rather continue to play at least 5 of the old Big 8 schools every year.

I'm nervous now, considering how wrong he was predicting the demise lol

I don't understand the fascination with the Big East. Did you look at what was said about revenues for the Big East?

"Fox outbid ABC/ESPN for the rights to the Big Ten Championship Game and the rights fees apparently are astronomical: $140 million for 6 years, which is an average of around $23 million per year. For comparisonís sake, the SEC title game brings in approximately $14 million per year and the Big East football TV contract with ESPN is worth about $13 million per year for all of that conferenceís games."

So currently the Big East is getting $13 million/yr for all their conference games all season, and the Big Ten is about to get $23 million/yr for ONE game.

Once the Big 12 TV contract is negotiated, as Chris Williams has said, everyone will feel a lot more secure. It sounds like the Big 12 TV revenue stream will be much larger than the Big East.

Re: Big 12 becoming more stable...

I wouldn't compare us to the big 10 though on tv, I don't know how much we got for it, but the additional tv money will be eaten somewhat by no longer having a championship game.

As for big east, with expansion their tv revenue will go up, and I'd like to know how their basketball revenue compares to big 12 since it currently brings in more cash than football.

Well that is great. I don't know how many Iowa and Nebraska fans who've told me the Big 12 is doomed.

Here is the annual TV revenue for each conference as reported by ESPNís Outside the Lines last month along with the average for each school:
    • Big Ten: $242 million ($22 million per school)
    • SEC: $205 million ($17.08 million per school)
    • Big 12: $78 million ($6.5 million per school)
    • ACC: $67 million ($5.58 million per school)
    • Pac-10: $58 million ($5.8 million per school)
    • Big East: $13 million for football/$20 million for basketball ($2.8 million per football school)

Big East Basketball = 20 million/16 schools = $1.25 million per basketball school...

Basketball revenues are insignificant compared to football. It is tv revenue for football that drives college sports and all this conference stuff...not basketball. That is why KU almost got left out in the cold with ISU despite KU's BB tradition

Re: Big 12 becoming more stable...

If the ACC deal is any indication, the ACC had a previous deal similar to the Big 12. They had a $67 million/yr deal and jumped to a $155 million/yr deal. The Big 12 has a $78 million/yr deal, so you'd think they could get a similar jump.

If the ACC can jump 2.5 times their revenue from one deal to the next, why would the Big 12 be all that different, even with the loss of Nebby?
