    HDD Malware

Has anyone experienced this HDD malware thing?

It's pretty obvious when it pops up that some program I've never heard of wants to (and automatically does) "scan" my system, and surprise, surprise, "diagnoses" a slew of problems. And of course, the thing it uses to try and call itself a Windows program has the wrong colors.....

How do I get rid of this thing?
Will maywarebytes (or whatever it is) clear that up?

    Re: HDD Malware

Spybot seek and destroy did the trick for me. Had it multiple times, malwarebytes should work as well. Maybe both is your best bet :)

Yes, there is no real benefit to buying the real one. Do you have another account on the computer or are you the only one?

This spycrap may block you from downloading MWB, but give it a shot, update it, and run the deep scan. At the end it may say it needs a reboot to kill the running services, so do that. If anything persists, let me know, there may be some additional tricky stuff we can try.

If it does do that, reboot to safe mode with networking and try again - sometimes the nasties don't install to the system and just hit the user account.

    I'd also recommend http://www.microsoft.com/security_es...s/default.aspx

as another cleaner. It's from microsoft and it more or less works ok.

MSE is good at preventing and will grab some, but for some reason it just isnt as thorough as MWB at already pooched machines. In my experience anyway.

a good bet is to use both as well as spybot if you've got problems.

best bet to clean up a machine is to reinstall

The scam antivirus infections arent too bad. In most cases they are simple to clean up and dont come back. The browser hijackers and pop up services suck. I hate those with a passion. Quite a few now really dig themselves into the bootup in msconfig instead of using registry entries which will throw you when you are trying find out where the trigger is. Annoying.
