Laptop motherboard died, will buy a new laptop, ideas? Comments?

I owned this laptop for 3.5 years. Bought the warrenty for 3 years, of course nothing went bad for the first 3, and now the motherboard is fried at age 3.5! HP won't cover the expense, it will be $400 to fix it. I am consering buying a new laptop.

I am a 2 year old when it comes to Mac machines. Can anyone explian to me why I would buy a Mac machine? I mostly use my laptop for: 1)DJing 2)Dance teaching (playing songs, keeping music files organized) 3)Facebook of course 4) Email 5) Absolutely no gaming, but occasional movie watching and 6)Engineering work (.doc, .xls, .ppt) from remote locations.

How much usually does a Mac book cost compared to a comparable (let's say an Intel i3, 6 gb mem, 500 gb hd $800) sony laptop etc?

I think I am done with HP btw. Please help.

For the tasks you say you want to do, you shouldn't need to speed $800 on a PC. I just 2 laptops about a week ago for $430 each which have core 2 duo, 4 gb mem, 320 gb hd. Depending on what you get with a mac I think you will be looking at atleast $1000.00 if not more for something comparable to what I got for $430.00

What about a good processor? For my need, can you rank the processors that are available these days? I mean should I pay top dollars for i3 as opposed to dual core?

Also what brand should I avoid besides HP?

With the tasks you listed in your first post I don't see any need for you to spend extra money on a I3 processor. I don't think you would even need a core 2 Duo. Anything dual core or better should suit your needs.

As for who to avoid, I would say e-machines and averatec are both very low quality machines. I would say between the rest of them they are all about the same.

The ones I purchased were from dell. They have a deal at Dell – The Official Site | Dell on the main page for a inspiron 15R for $449.99 with a intel I3 processor, 4gb and 500gb HD. Though when I added it to the cart it said $499.99. I didn't bother to look into it any farther for that. But If I could get a I3 processor for lets say only $50.00 or less more than a dual core I would go for the extra cost.

Yeah. HP blows. I had two seperate hard drives from them fail within two years of purchase. I'll never buy HP again.

Just as a fyi but HP doesn't manufacture Hard Drives Most Major PC makers will use the same hard drives in their systems.

head over to the Dell website. Today's '12 days of Christmas' deal is an Inspiron 15r for $499. Laptop is fairly loaded, with a core i3 processor, 4gb of ddr memory, and a 500gb hard drive. i actually pulled the trigger on this one this morning, as I have been looking for a new laptop as well.

I am considering it. Did you get the 3 year warrenty with it?

If it helps I considered posting that a Macbook Air was the way to go, but the OP didn't seem to be looking for that sort of thing and a Dell is perfectly fine...

Check into ASUS laptops, and look on this site:

Asus Laptops & Notebooks at TigerDirect.com

Great machines, well rated, and affordable. I love mine.
