It's hard to imagine the Big 10 being good. It wasn't to long ago that the conference was awful

Re: New Dec. 6th RPI is out.... ISU #11, Big 12 #2

In some ways it's a big game, but there's not a whole lot at stake outside of bragging rights. I suppose it's about as big as a non-conference game can be. Both teams are good this year, so neither team will take a big hit from a loss (although the winner will have a nice feather in their NCAA resume cap). Continuing to beat Iowa more often than not will help recruiting in Iowa and nearby states somewhat, but overall sucess matters much more.

Maybe I'm just downplaying it as a proactive defense mechanism in case ISU loses, or maybe I'm downplaying it because I have a conflict that will keep me from attending or even watching the game. :)

Re: New Dec. 6th RPI is out.... ISU #11, Big 12 #2

Bill has always taken pride in saying ISU is the top program in the state, and not just in attendance numbers. His stated goal has also been to be able to sign the top prospects in Iowa.
ISU not only suffered a blow-out loss the last time in Carver-Hawkeye, but we also must take note of Bluder's recruiting coups in the last few months. After our loss two years ago, the scene in the Cyclone lockerroom was not pretty.
The most credible way to demonstrate that there's still a gap between the two programs is to beat them head to head, at their place.
I commend your self-awareness/honesty, mred, as yes, I think down-playing the game is indeed a defense mechanism in event of a loss.
This game is huge for BF, the team, and the program. It is every year. I think with Iowa's upgrades in their program, it's even bigger now.

So far Bill has been able to get the best of Iowa's talent who:

    a) weren't a long time Hawk fan.
    b) or, went outside Iowa to play in the end.

All subject to change of course if we fail to make a statement in IC. I don't want to start rationalizing why recruits are going to Iowa when we needed them.

This is a big game. Bluder recruiting is swinging the tide. The one way to stop it is on the court. Need to get a tougher team for the game.

We all talked about not getting Greenfield, Johnson or Stokes, but I honestly think HC has the potential to be an All-American. Her athleticism, ability to hit the 3, solid hands and physical play are all there. I have been really impressed.

Anyone catch BF's presser? He indicated he didn't think this game meant much to in-state recruits, and that he felt his game plan 2 years ago was a contributing factor in the loss. You got to love a coach who accepts responsibility.

Don't forget the positive impact the Big 10 network has on recruiting for Big 10 schools. High school girls can see a lot of women's b-ball on that network; unfortunately, the same can't be said for Big 12 women's b-ball.

I am with Bill on this one, Twisted. I just do not see this game as HUGE. I hate Iowa and I want to win because it’s against a rival but I think the need to beat Iowa is way overstated. We got beat bad there two years ago and that sucked from a rivals standpoint but for crying out loud we went on to the Elite Eight that year. This isn’t football where recruiting Iowa is considered some critical building block or battleground for fans. Iowa looks to have a pretty good team this year but I am not overly concerned about recruiting against them. We got the best player in Iowa from last years class, Halle. Our main target from this year’s Iowa high school went to Stanford, not Iowa. Stokes ended up being their WBB version of Barnes.

I really like the kids coming next years, at least on paper. We only graduate Bolte and add a lot. No reason to think that we will become Iowa’s little sister. When we had more Iowa and Minnesota kids on the roster people would ***** that Bill couldn’t recruit big city “athletes”. Now we have some big city kids coming in next year and people are ******** about not recruiting Iowa kids.

This is a very good point.
VB coach Christy Johnson-Lynch has also talked about the recruiting advantages that come with the Big Ten Network, and said it was very important for a similiar one to start in the Big 12.

Agree totally on Hallie. And if our ladies win in IC Bill will recognize the players and his assistants' super job. If we lose it's not a season downer but a win is what an elite program would do. Are we there yet?

Agree with most of this - but physical?? She weighs about 80 pounds. I have seen her fall down and turn the ball over when catching the ball in the post at least 10 times this year.

I really like her as a player - and have said so here before. But physical is ot an adjective I would use.

Just substitute "aggressive" for physical. She isn't big weight-wise but she is very active and not as passive as Prins who really has the size to be more physical than she is.
