    When I was a kid I remember "Dandy" Don, Frank and Howard Cosell in the booth on Monday nights...those three were larger than life. Everyone knew who they were. He was very entertaining during his time in the booth.

    He walked away from the game at 31. "I tried to talk him out of it," Cowboys Coach Tom Landry said, "but when you lose your desire in this game, that's it."
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Wow, sorry to hear of his passing; I thought he really made MNF back in the days with Cosell.
    Also hard to believe he lost his passion for the game at age 31. I'll never forget watching him in the "Ice Bowl" vs the Packers.
    "We are first and foremost an educational institution that values integrity, honesty and treating others with fairness and respect".
    Sad to hear. He was the perfect sidekick for Cosell and those two made MNF a must see event. RIP.
    Re: RIP Don Meredith
    One great story from Monday Night Football was one cold night in Philadelphia, Howard Cossell was having trouble with the game, slurring his speech, obviously drunk. Howard said he was sick and eventually they took him out of the booth, so Don takes over the play by play and he says: "This is Don, folks. Howard's sick. Matter of fact, he just go sick all over my boots."
    Re: RIP Don Meredith
    The original MNF was truly a trend setter and owes much of it's success to Dandy Don. I believe that it was the first production to elevate the color guys to equal or even above the play by play guy. It was also the first or at least one of the first broadcasts to put 3 guys in the booth. Cosell always had an air of superiority as he always acted like he was the serious journalist paired with a couple of ex-jocks. Gifford was OK as the p-b-p guy and almost always paid homage to Cosell. Meredith was the opposite - he routinely infuriated Cosell by either challenging his points or outright making fun of him. The interaction was pure genius and will probably never be matched.
    Howard was in the bag for a lot of MNF games. I stood right behind him in the pressbox in Chicago and I would say he wasn't so much drunk as sedated. It seemed to wear off as the awful game unfolded.
    At the conclusion, we asked Howard for an autograph as the broadcast team was walking out. He said something about being late for dinner reservations and kept walking.
    The crazy thing was, they got about 100 yards away and Alex Karras and Frank Gifford turned around, came back, and signed our programs.
    Actual quote from Frank, "The hell with Howard".
