Jayson Werth signs with the Nats??

This one makes no sense other than the money. Why go to a team with little upside and leave a team that has been killing the NL? I guess money is more important than winning.

Jayson Werth agrees to $126 million, 7-year deal with Nationals - ESPN

Re: Jayson Werth signs with the Nats??

They have a pretty decent future... Harper just got drafted. Strasburg is hurt for next year, but still a future STAR. Zimmerman is only 26 and a power bat at 3rd base/clubhouse leader. They've got some good young pitching in Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, Jordan Zimmerman, Craig Stammen, and John Lannen.

He's the star now. Plus he's getting PAID.

So, you would turn down that offer?

Correct. Money is more important than winning.

Why would he turn down that offer?

Too much money for that guy, but oh well. He already has his world series ring too, why not leave?

Yeah I would turn that down to play for a team that has a shot at a title. Winning is more important than an extra 10-15 mil. But that is just me.

Baffling move. The Nats are a couple of years away from having their young players be ready to make a post season run. Why blow that kind of money on Werth now? Take your shot at a big FA in a couple of years when you should be much closer to winning. He's not a guy that puts butts in the seats either. Hard to see how this doesn't set them back in the long run.

Re: Jayson Werth signs with the Nats??

I really don't have a problem with any player accepting that type of offer from any team. All things equal (contractual terms), I would not want to sign with the Nats but things weren't equal and he will never have to worry about his or his family's economic situation ever (unless the guy just doesn't get it, and there are many once-wealthy former athletes out there like that).

I just wonder why the offer got that large? Almost tripled the total package of Dunn's contract...was Washington that desperate to spend money? Werth is a good player but that seems way out of proportion!

Way too much jack for this guy. Without the lineup protection he had in Philly he will be average. Also, I'd be surprised if Philly offered him anywhere near this (I didnt read) so I have no problem with him taking the deal.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

I think the 2nd post has the right perspective. If you're a Nats executive, there has to be somebody that you can pay in a couple of years, when the team is more ready to make a move.

I think it's easy for anyone to say that one thing is more important than money when that sort of money will never be offered to us. I'd like to say that my decisions wouldn't be affected, but 10-15 million dollars probably does a lot of affecting. And if it's something like winning, if I'm an athlete, I probably assume that I can do that anywhere.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

From the way people are reporting on this story it sounds like the Nationals offered way more than $10-15 mil higher than all the other clubs.

I too don't understand what the Nats were thinking with this contract, but I totally understand what Werth was thinking. He probably made closer to $50 mil more with this deal (7 years/$126 mil for a 31 year old guy who isn't all that good?) I would guess that the next best offer for him was in the range of 4 for $56 or $60. Assuming he could remain somewhat productive in Washington - and avoid injury - he would probably have another smaller contract after that at 35 years old, maybe 3 for $15/$20. That is 7 years at $80 mil, tops, and Werth just got $46 more than that GUARANTEED!

I think this is true. I think athletes feel they can win or be part of winning anywhere, college or pros.

Re: Jayson Werth signs with the Nats??

Thank you, Washington Nationals. The BoSox had been going after Werth hard, much to my chagrin. He's a good player, but I wouldn't want to have $15 mil a year locked up in this guys for 6 years. Now it's Crawford or nothing, I'd rather pay Crawford $160 mil over 7 years then gamble on Werth's contract.

He would never turn down that Godfather offer, love of winning or not. You would have thought he would have gotten something north of Dunn but not a ton more. He probably got $40-$50 more in total salary over the course of the deal.

You can't walk away from that, not if you want to stay in the players union anyway.

If somebody offers you 10-20% more than the rest of the market, there's no way you turn that down.
