with all this big 11 talk...

...I started thinking, purely hypothetically, if we WERE to be brought in to the big 10, in order to have a 12 team league, what that league would look like. obviously it's going to be split into divisions, and most likely on an east/west geographic basis. So, I decided to take a gander as to what these divisions would look like...
    East:
    Penn State
    Michigan
    Michigan State
    tOSU
    Indiana
    Purdue

    West:
    Wisconsin
    Minnesota
    Iowa
    Iowa State
    Northwestern
    Illinois

Imagine getting to play Minnesota, Northwestern, and Illinois every year! Then there could be years were we play Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State from that other division! Anyways, while I favor staying in the big 12, I could see major benefits that would include increased exposure, and an easier schedule, by playing in the big 10.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Re: with all this big 11 talk...

There is no way that Michigan and OSU would be in the same division. They would be opposite of each other. That way they could meet in the conference championship game.
Do you think it's a coincidence that Florida State and Miami are in opposite divisions even though they are in the same state?

Remember, geography doesn't always matter. Atlanta and New Orleans were in the NFC West for years. Dallas was in the East. Even the Iowa Cubs are part of the Pacific Coast League.

What about Texas and Oklahoma? They play in the same division. Florida and Auburn? I don't know.

Re: with all this big 11 talk...

It's kinda funny - I once read an article about the Big 10 doing a "Land" and "Lakes" division breakouts (which, when you think about it, leads to a North/South breakdown):

    Land (South):
    Iowa
    Iowa State/Pittsburgh/Missouri
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Purdue
    Ohio St.

    Lakes (North):
    Minnesota
    Wisconsin
    Northwestern
    Michigan
    Michigan St
    Penn St.

Re: with all this big 11 talk...

I would think that when you have two national contenders that they would put them in opposite divisions. Oklahoma and Texas were destined to be in the same one. How else could they split that up? East/West wouldn't make sense because of the travel.

With Florida and Auburn you have more than one or two other big names in the conference.

I just don't know why you would put your two powerhouses in one division. If you did that then you run the chance of having a Big XII North as one of those divisions. Spread it out evenly.

Bingo! We have a winner. It would definitely have to be a "north/south" split because of OSU & Michigan. I like your lakes/land names too!

BTW, John Fricke of Fox Sports Radio addressed this Saturday (though he replaced Missouri for ISU) and he also mentioned it would have to be north/south to keep the powerhouses separate...

Do OSU and Michigan currently play every year despite the unbalanced schedule? If they do play every year does the conference make an exception for certain rivalries or do they schedule a "non-con" game for the off years? Anybody know?

Yes they do. I believe each team is allowed two rival teams that they play every year.

Re: with all this big 11 talk...

My Dad is an tOSU alum and he would love to see Notre Dame as the 12th team. Some people think that's nuts but he's looking at it as that would make the conference much tougher to add a quality program. If you added a Mizzou or Iowa State or whatever you really aren't improving the quality of your conference.

I think Iowa plays Wisconsin and Minnesota as their rivals.

I don't think Notre Dame would ever be foolish enough to join the Big 11. There just isn't any benefit to them. They have their own TV deal and a BCS deal, and all of the money goes directly to them, without having to share with conference partners.

Re: with all this big 11 talk...

Am I missing something with all of this Little 11 talk? Is there some new "credible" evidence of it? Everything I have seen is that the Little 11 is not even interested in this since they are happy not having to play a conference championship and knock one of there upper teams out. So why all the talk all of a sudden. I just want to know what I missed.
