    Big XII Championship Turf Question

So the game is being played at the Cowboys stadium, so what exactly do they do to change the turf? Do they just paint it?

I wondered this too. There's no evidence on the field of Cowboys logos or even the NFL hash marks.

Yes - they paint the logos on the field. There was a question on the Big 12 site about it yesterday and they said that they have a zamboni like machine then to remove the paint.

They make removable paint for field turf. I know Qwest field uses it to go from Soccer to Football. I would guess Cowboy Stadium is using something similar.

Re: Big XII Championship Turf Question

I thought I had read when the stadium opened that Jerry Jones bought separate fields for college and the NFL. They may repaint the end zones and logoes, but I'm pretty sure it's a different field than the one they use on Sundays. No link though.

I thought you were crazy when I first read this post, but a Google search reveals you are correct...

Re: Big XII Championship Turf Question

Texas Stadium has at least 3 different turfs. One for the Cowboys, one for college football games, one for soccer, and maybe even one other for high school games.

Say the Cowboys had a game-- after the game is over-- they roll up the field in sections and store it. The other turf is then rolled out-- be it college football turf, soccer turf, or other turf. The newly laid turf is then seamed together with some sort of turf tape on the bottom side of the seams. After the turf is all laid out then the rubber bits and sand is put back into the turf and then finally painted.

All stadiums, except for possibly new Giants Stadium, don't have the kind of money Jerry World has to have multiple artificial turf fields so they do have to re-paint the same field when hosting multiple events.

Re: Big XII Championship Turf Question

The only drawback seems to be that it takes 48 hours to change fields. That means you can't have a college game and a Cowboys game in the same weekend unless the Cowboys game is a Thursday or Monday game.

I noticed that the article said it did take 48 hours between "turf" events. I remember a few years ago the Georgia Dome having 3 games in 4 days and removed the paint and re-painted the turf between each game. Peach Bowl to Falcons to Sugar Bowl (Superdome was out of commission that year due to Hurricane Katrina.)

The paint appeared to be easily removable. Many of the OU players ended up with paint marks all over their white uniforms.
