    Dan Gable Traveling Trophy? Really?

Just can't believe ISU went along with this. Gable is a Hawk. What's next, do we play for the Hayden Fry Trophy for football, or the Lute Olson Trophy for basketball?
Even Gable himself is questioning it:

"I just didn’t think Iowa State would agree with that,” Gable said after his old program — the Hawkeyes — beat his alma mater in a dual for the seventh straight time. “That was my first thought, because I’ve been away from them for quite a while and because you’re a Hawkeye, there’s a lot of rivalry there.”

It will never leave Iowa City, so...... whatever.

Yeah, I was kind of confused by that as well. I mean, Gable did compete here, but in the eyes of the world he's a Hawkeye, not a Cyclone who later became a Hawkeye.

    Dan Gable is a tool.

    Hayden Fry is a tool.

    I sense a pattern...

Gable didn't do what Sanderson did. Gable left because ISU didn't have a head coaching job for him, Iowa did. The fault for that was on ISU, not Gable.

People forget that. He's viewed as a traitor because he saw the writing on the wall. Had he gone to Iowa and tanked, people wouldn't consider him a traitor.

Gable left to become an Iowa assistant, but is ISU is supposed to fire Harold Nichols, one of the greatest wrestling coaches ever, and and ISU's best coach in any sport, and replace him with Dan Gable? Really?

I'm not saying that by any means. Gable left because we didn't have the opportunity that he wanted here. Of course we weren't going to fire Harold Nichols. That's why Gable left to pursue his coaching career elsewhere. He's also appeared in his ISU letterman jacket at several ISU meets I've been to over the years. He's obviously a Hawkeye now, but he has never played down his roots at Iowa State. That's why I'm not upset by it beiing the "Dan Gable" trophy, just confused they didn't name it something else.

The whole reason Bobby Douglas got removed for Cael was to prevent another Gable from getting away from us and going to Iowa.

I guess I don't either. Gable won a lot of matches and titles at ISU and went to the Olympics as a former Clone. Sure, people view him as a hok. So what? No one outside the state or the (small) national wrestling community will even know that there's a trophy anyway.

Gable is as much a Cyclone as a Hawkeye IMO. He's really a spokensmen for the sport now anyway. Its fine to have a trophy for him, but this thing as been so one sided its not gonna matter much. A rivalry has to go both ways. See Cy-Hawk Trophy.

I don't see it leaving Iowa City except for them to parade it around Hilton every other year and take it back with them...

IMO, you can't compare the two. Douglas wasn't winning championships. If Bobby Douglas had been winning titles, as Nichols was, Cael would not have gotten the job here.
