I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

I can't prove anything, but from some of the responses I received I believe that Iowa State is investigating the possiblity of being in the Big 10 conference. We all have our own feelings about it one way or another, but look at the reasons to at least look.
    1. A Midwest dominated conference, easier travel, more like schools
    2. More potential natural rivalries, Iowa, Wisc. Minnesota
    3. Big 12 has become dominated by Texas and the South
    4. Pollard has close ties to the conference
    5. Excellent chance for success in athletics
    6. ISU would not have to play Iowa in non conf. schedule, opening up other games
There are many other reasons pro and con, but I believe discussions are going on and ISU is taking a hard look.

Iowa State would crawl on its knees to become a member of the Big 10. But ISU doesn't have any say in the matter.

I like the challenge of the Big 12. Ohio State and Michigan are usually pretty good and then it's the other 9. The Big 10 USUALLY show their colors during post season. Good TV package though.

Big 10 would want Nebraska first, Missouri second, and Iowa State 3rd. It's a money thing.

They may be considering it, but it ain't gonna happen. Makes much more sense for the Big 11 to get an East coast team like Rutgers or Syracuse.

One of the deciding factors is TV packages. The Big 10 already has the state of Iowa covered with EIU, so ISU would make that redundant. I'm going to agree with AV8R and say it would probably be Syracuse. (Huge TV market in NY)

Better TV market, but wouldn't travel cost be a nagative factor when compared to getting a midwest school? Maybe they would balance each other out since they share the pot in the Big 10...

Re: I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

    I'm betting you are wrong.

I doubt ADJP would have hired Chizik to be the football coach if he had plans to move ISU to the Big Ten. Chizik's ties are in the south, and he's not yet quite established enough to recruit the south without at least a little bit of TV exposure, which is what would happen if ISU moved to the Big Ten.

It seems to me that it would be a monumental disaster for ISU to move to the Big Ten. ISU would just be a small fish fighting in an already over-crowded pond (i.e. big name schools established in the midwest) for recruits. Take a look at the Census Bureau population projections for the next 30 years. The population explosions are in the south, not in the Big Ten states. More population in the south = more good football recruits to choose from.

I really don't understand all the Big Ten love. ISU is in the Big 12. I think it would be wise for ISU fans to give up their wunderlust for the Big Ten and start working towards making ISU a prominent player in the Big 12.

Here's Mike DeCourcy's (Sporting news) take in terms of cable market.

    Texas??? Craziness! and totally unrealistic!!

SportingNews.com - College Football - Will the Big Ten grow to a dozen?

Just to be clear, I didn't say ISU is moving, but that they are looking at it. I'm pretty confident on my statement. The powers that be may decide it's not worth pursuing or even considering.

Re: I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

It would never be ISU or Nebraska. ESPN is the driving force behind this, and they want to acquire a MAJOR media market that is previously untapped by the Big Ten. ISU shares a market with Iowa, and there aren't enough people and advertising dollars in Nebraska.

They will go South or East of their current 8 state empire to acquire a 12th team. The Big Ten would have to be turned down by a lot of teams before ISU gets an offer.

Re: I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

Our Budget would probably go up by 15 million by joining that conference. Being in the B10 is most of the reason why Iowa has has so much success. My only gripe is that hawk fans think they are on TV because the nation wants them on. NO....Its called a contract. There is problably more tourist in Chicago rightnow than there are hawkeye fans out there. That is how small of population our state is.
I would like to see what ISU would do playing in the midwest on TV every week with much more budget to work with. Recruiting would get easier.

The last few guys were right about the other schools first.
If I were the Big 10, this would be my pics
    1. Notre Dame - So many TV sets you can't even imagine. Perfectly located in the middle of the B10. ND is making too much money by not being in a conference however.
    2. Rutgers - Millions of viewers, but not the stongest tradition. Travel wouldn't great, but doable for the far west teams.
    3. Loiusville - Better location and becoming a very good sports school.
    4. Syracuse - See Rutgers, but better at basketball.
    5. Missouri - KC and STL - Great location
    6. Nebraska - Big into football - Decent location.
    7. Iowa State - Awesome location - On the move.

What do you think about that...??

Re: I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

From a post in another thread, you overestimate the importance of the Big 10 adding the NYC market. New York could care less about college sports. By adding Syracuse or Rutgers you're not adding the NYC market - you're just adding the parts of upstate New York or New Jersey that care. That's not all that exciting. Plus there's the sentiment by many that adding Penn St. was a mistake because it made the Big 10 too "east coast." That's only going to get worse by adding Syracuse or Rutgers (although it may not prevent it). Louisville's not going to happen because they don't belong to the AAU, the college research organization. Notre Dame is just the Big 10's wet dream. Even though the Big 10 would make concessions for Notre Dame because they don't belong to the AAU either, it's never going to happen anyway. Why would Notre Dame want to share all that TV revenue with 11 other schools? Iowa State's likely not going to happen because the Big 10 already has Iowa. It would be the Big 10's version of the state of Kansas in the Big 12 with twice the population (Kansas by far the least populated state holding two schools in a major conference). IMO, the most likely candidates are Pittsburgh and Missouri. They both belong to the AAU and they both bring in markets that the Big 10 doesn't already have (you're not going to convince me that currently Pittsburgh is a Big 10 city).

Re: I'm betting ISU considering the Big 10 Confenence

Another thing that will rule out some schools is that the Big 11 schools are required to be Research Institutions. That rules out schools like Louisville and Nebraska (I think). ISU is sitting higher academically than many of the schools on the want list. I'm still betting on Rutgers or Pitt, but ISU is right in there behind them.

I personally would like to see it happen, but I doubt that it does. ISU has a lot to prove. Getting the facilities plan moving forward would be a good step to show people that they are serious about athletics.
