    Could 2011-2012 be the year....

that ISU finally starts to 'break out' as an athletic department? The football team will bring back it's best defense since 2004, with some exciting players on offense. The MBB team will have top 10 talent. WBB will be a top 25 program as usual, and wrestling will be top 5, as usual. I just have a feeling that next year will be a really good year for ISU athletics, and with conference realignment always hanging out there, we will need it.

It's about the right time of year for these kinds of statements.

It does shape up nicely to start drinking the kool-aide.

On a side note, snowcraig, do you need to get the kids from school today? Just a friendly reminder!

For the record, I was predicting 6 wins in football this year, with maybe a sniff of the NIT in basketball, so I'm not overly drinking the koolaid. I just think personnel wise, we have more talent coming back in MBB and football than we have had in a long while.

And no, I don't have to get the kid today!

It's possible, but we've been here before in prior years. If our redshirt class plays well next year (and we find a QB) in football and we don't lose all our basketball transfers in basketball (and I have no doubt that Jackson and his team will live up to expectations in wrestling next year) then Iowa State could very well have a breakout year.

There has to be a hint of desparation in it too, because we have to break out and be a bigger player soon if we want to not end up on the outside looking in when the next round of conference expansion hits.

I feel like that is why Fred is taking so many transfers, and why I would be that CPr makes a run at guys like Martinez and Brantley if they are available.

"Finally"? You mean, as opposed to 2000 or 2001?

Yes, like those years, but hopefully we can sustain it this time. BVD killed the momentum we gained with those two seasons.

When you go 10 years without success, I think you get to start over for having a breakout year

Technically I think we "broke out" in 1999-2000 . Our football team won its first bowl game over a good Pitt squad. Our Men's and Women's basketball teams both made it to the Elite 8. That was a heck of a year. Glad I was on campus for it.
So the question is, when are we going to resurge?!

Man I hope so, we have the potential to be competitive in the Big 12 in MBB and obviously Wrestling and football to some extent.

I guess that since FB is king and the big money maker whether it is a breakout year or not depends on CPR and his staff. How long has it been since we had a our FB team in a bowl game and our MBB in the NCAA's? It appears that it was almost a decade ago.

My biggest fear is the FB team. I am not trying to be a downer but We lose a lot on offense, replacing AA, Arob, Franklin, Lamaak and Co could be a steeper task than we think. WR, QB, RB, TE and multiple positions on the OL are in question (yeah I realize that this really incompases the whole Offense). This means we will need some of Chizzle-D***'s recruits and CPR's recruits to step up. This is really the make or break year for this offensive scheme because with our new schedule and playing ATM, OSU, OU, TX, TTU, MU and Baylor every year we must avg more than 20pts per game.

Our defense should as you mention be pretty good if we can find that elusive pass rush on a consistent basis. Again this rely's heavily on the offense because if the O goes 3 and out 90% of the time then we dont have enough depth and sooner or later the defense will wear down and start to fall apart against better opponents.

sorry to derail the thread but from my personal perspective the AD as a whole will not have a breakout year if CPR and his team are sitting at home again for the holiday season.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Re: Could 2011-2012 be the year....

I am not going to get my hopes up for football just yet. Yes, we may have more overall talent, but we are losing quite a bit at the same time. We are losing our starting QB (even though many may think that is a good thing), our best safety in Sims, our 2 best receivers (arguably) in Williams and Franklin, and our starting RB. We may have more of a pass rush, but unless someone steps up, we might be hurting at safety.

The biggest and most obvious question is who is going to be our starting QB? Shontrelle is no doubt a playmaker, but he needs to be more consistent and hang on to the ball to be an every down back. Who is going to step up an take Williams' spot? Can one of the TE's step up and be a go to guy like Franklin?

God forbid we have any injuries because we are not a deep team.

2009-2010 was the best year ever for the ISU AD.

    34th overall in Director's Cup.

Apparently OP didn't enjoy the ride!

Re: Could 2011-2012 be the year....

We lose a lot of our key offensive players off of a 5-7 football team that has another beast of a schedule to look forward to. I guess it depends on your definition of a breakout, 6-6 or 7-5 and another low level bowl maybe, but I wouldn't bet on any more than that.

And for basketball, we have a hyped up practice squad that few if any on this board have seen play together. And we have a head coach that has only coached a couple of games, and none against BCS competition. I'm more optimistic than I was under GMac, but I'm not drinking that kool-aid yet either.

I think the year 2012 has a good chance of being a good one, with the 2011-2012 basketball team and the 2012 football schedule being a bit more favorable.
