    Tyrus McGee scores 38....

    from Cowley's website....Tyrus playing great!

    December 2, 2010
McGee’s 38 points help Cowley open conference play with 93-82 win

Making one of its longest trips of the season, the Cowley College men’s basketball team got a career-high 38 points from sophomore Tyrus McGee as they opened conference play with an exciting 93-82 win at Highland Community College on Wednesday.

The victory improves the Tigers’ record to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.

Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme was pleased with his team’s resiliency as they rallied from a nine-point first half deficit.

“I was proud of our kids, they were tough,” DeSalme said. “Every time we were about to get knocked out the guys responded. This was a great win for us.”

The win over the Scotties did not come easy as Highland, led by Jarmar Gulley’s 35 points, built a 37-28 lead with three minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Tigers closed the half on a 9-1 run to pull within one-point of the lead (38-37) at halftime.

Back-to-back baskets by Highland’s Antonio Walker pushed the Scotties’ lead to 56-51 seven minutes into the second half before Cowley answered with an 11-2 run, which was capped by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Dominick Cornelius, putting the Tigers on top 62-58 with just over 10 minutes left to play.

McGee would score 14 points over the final 10 minutes of play and helped salt the game away by going 11-of-12 at the free-throw line.

DeSalme and the rest of the spectators witnessed quite a performance from McGee and Gulley as the two combined for 73 points and 14 rebounds, while making 28-of-30 free-throw attempts.

“Those are two of the best players in the country,” DeSalme said. “It was a fun game to be a part of. Highland is good, they are not going to lose many games at home.”

Cornelius had another solid game for the Tigers as he finished with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

“Domo was really good, he played all 20 minutes in the second half and was a leader when we needed a flow offensively and defensively.”

Sophomore forward James Watson also stepped up with 14 points, nine rebounds and a season-high five blocked shots.

“James was special, he dominated defensively,” DeSalme said.

After getting an earful from DeSalme during a timeout in the first half, sophomore point guard Ashton Patton helped direct the Tiger offense to 56 percent shooting in the second half. Patton would finish the game with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

“Ashton responded to what I said to him, he didn’t pout, he went out and made his team better,” DeSalme said. “That was a big example to our players.”

Highland, which drops to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk East, shot just 41.7 percent from the floor and forced Cowley into only seven turnovers.

De’Andre Upchurch, who entered the game averaging 21.7 points per game, was held to 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting.

Cowley will face another difficult road game when they play at Kansas City Saturday at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 19 and are 9-1 on the season.

“Playing two tough road games in a short amount of time is a great challenge for us, I hope we can step up and find a way to be 2-0 in the conference,” DeSalme said.

I can not wait to see this kid in a cyclone uniform. I've only read great things about him. Seems to be a leader as well.

Nice offensive numbers. Was he guarding the kid who put up 35 though?

Still needs to work on taking care of the ball if he wants to be the starting PG next year.

This is true. He'll have to compete with Tavon Sledge for the starting pg spot. I also heard that Anthony Booker is not as good as advertised (at least offensively) and we will more than likely start three guards again next year.

Chris Allen, Scottie, Ejim and Royce White are probable and then add Sledge or McGee to that mix.

A lot can change from now till then though, but just hypothetically speaking if next season were to start tomorrow, that would be the lineup.
