    Storage Unit Auction Shows

K, so who is thinking of doing this. I watched one of the new shows on A & E last night and the whole thing seemed nothing more than a crap shoot at most.

It would be for an amateur. These guys know what they are looking for though. So not really that much of a crap shoot for them. Sure they probably get burned sometimes. Overall they know what they need to big and make.

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

It can definitely be a crap shoot at times but sometimes you come across some good stuff. I recommend doing research on income demographics in certain areas before you decide which auctions to visit. Higher income areas mean higher valued goods in storage. You can easily do this by using Hotpad's nationwide income heat map. www.storageunitauctionlist.com has an e-book that also has some great tips on how to make money, and it's free to download. I bought their NC list and have been making money ever since.

    Re: Storage Unit Auction Shows

read the disclaimer they put up at the beginning of the show. the units they show on tv are their best finds, they probably are lucky to break even on most units they buy.

the guys they focus on have the means to liquidate the stuff they buy. at least two of them own discount stores. The vast majority of the stuff wouldn't be small stuff you could easily sell on c'list, ebay, etc. you'd have to have some storage ability.

You know what I'd like to see them find? A Hollywood writer with some freaking talent, so we could see something other than reality shows. That would be a rare find indeed.

I am with you on this one. I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite shows on TV right now.

I love these shows, though that is mainly because I own 3 storage facilities. I am getting tons of calls from people wanting to attend our next auction. In the past we have always done sealed bid auctions, but for our next one we will be bringing in a live auctioneer.

There are currently 7 different storage auction reality shows in production with the main two everyone knows of being Auction Hunters and Storage Wars. I am even working on trying to get one of the unnamed shows to come do some filming in Iowa but have not heard much from that front yet.

One of the characters said that for every profitable unit they buy ten full of junk. I suspect they sweeten a few for the viewing audience. Still an interesting show.

That isn't the case if they know what they are doing. Most people at our auctions only bid on what they think they can get for the large items they see. Now that doesn't mean the units aren't full of junk too though. I can't comment on if they sweeten the units for the show, but we have sold some units that had upwards of $40k worth of stuff in them so it can happen. I wouldn't have the same people buying my units for the last 14 years if they weren't making money off them.

    Re: Storage Unit Auction Shows

cytech - since you have 1st hand knowledge of this, I'd be interested in hearing more of what you had to say about storage auctions.

    including:

    - what's the story with people with $40k worth of stuff in their locker not being able to come up with the monthly rent. what is the most common disposition? death? just forgot? no more money?

    - how often do you deal with irate people who have had their stuff sold at auction?

    - how many people show up at your auctions?

    - how often do you have auctions, and how many units are generally auctioned at that time?

    Thanks -
