    Just watched UNI replay (ESPN3)

I missed the game last night, but have just finished watching the replay. Aside from the gawd-awful video quality, here is what I saw.

First, Not sure if it was good D or just lazy and poor O for us for the first time all year, but our movement on offense was consistently bad. Really looked like we were coached by McD at times - we'd start running screens on the wings and DG would then just take the 3. This happened so many times. We really didn't share the ball well last night. Too many isolation jump shots and not enough dribble penetration. In many of our other games we've been hitting jump shots created by dribble penetration and tonight we never created those open looks as a team. We looked really lazy on offense for a good 2/3 of the game. Credit UNI for being the best defensive team we've seen so far. The reason they've had success in the past few years is making you play their game and taking you out of yours. They did that again last night.

We just flat out couldn't shoot last night. Too many contested jumpers forced up without creating open looks as a team. Gotta be more patient and I think this is a product of us being first year in a new offensive system and not being comfortable to run the offense and get the good shot when faced with adversity. You see your team down in the score, and you feel the need to make up the points quickly.

HUGE sequence that really hurt us:
About 3:20 left in the game with the score 50-47, Ahelegba (sp? - don't care) blatantly travels, but misses the shot. Entire ISU fanbase and team make a big "OOOHHH" when they didn't call the travel. Scotty rebounds, but immediately gets the ball stripped from behind. UNI gets an easy bucket to make it 52-47. Crowd got really into it after that made bucket. Sure we tied it up 2 minutes later with Anderson's 3... but that non call then turnover and easy score totally put the momentum back in their court.

After Anderson's 3, Cook hits a tough step back to give UNI a 2-point lead. We played great D on that play, but they got the bucket anyway.

I think the inbounds foul on Anderson was crap. Just a bad call on a guy fighting through a screen. There was no replay shown and from the camera angle just looked like a ticky-tack foul to me.. Maybe he grabbed jersey or something, but still... awful call in a tight game.

To me, we got outplayed. UNI controlled the game and we made mistakes and got some questionable calls when we had a chance to steal the game. We really needed to share the ball more. Can't say that enough. We came in averaging 18+ assist a game and had 7 for the night. I think it will be a good learning experience for the team and the coaching staff. I'm still pumped about this team and the season.

UNI controlled the game. Can't say that enough.

Those are 3 excellent points. Those, along with rebounding, were the key to the game.

I was going to go watch parts on ESPN3 again, mainly because I wanted to see what they called with DG's travel at the end. I didn't see anything anywhere close to a travel on that.

In my opinion, if the refs don't call this...we win the game.

This one right here. When a 6' 175 lb guard for UNI has 8 rebounds and JVB, Godfrey, and Railey combine for 12 rebounds..... That is a PROBLEM. Let's hope they work on that a bit more in practice.

I wasn't mad watching the game at all. It is going to take some time and this team is going to get better. The main issues last night were fundamental issues that are fixable.

From the video posted on Cyclones.com it's very obvious that DG took extra steps. It was a good call.

At that point would DG's basket put ISU up by 2 or tied at 54?

I am just chalking it all up to We could not shoot the ball last night. 33% will lose us every game. It happens.

Re: Just watched UNI replay (ESPN3)

    Good post asmosis.

The biggest disappointment for me is that we didn't match UNI's intensity. We struggled with blocking off defensively, and there were stretches where we weren't willing to work for a high % shot.

Thankfully these things are correctable, and hopefully they will learn from their mistakes.

Yeah the ESPN 3 angle made it too hard to call it for sure traveling or not. I just can't believe they missed Ahelegba jumping 3 feet with the ball in his hand after already taking a few steps. Such horrible officiating, but we cost ourselves the game with our play.

Re: Just watched UNI replay (ESPN3)

I'm not so upset with missing the contested shots (lthough I agree we should have worked a little harder for more open looks), but even when they had wide open 3's and layups we were missing them. Gotta make the easy ones if you want to win.

Agreed. I'm looking forward to see if we can correct mistakes as a team. We rarely did that under McD. You have to identify weaknesses as a team (and as individuals) and work to correct and improve. Izzo is fantastic at getting his team tourney ready in this way. They are a completely different team from November to March -- much more bullet-proof from playing tough competition, correcting mistakes and demanding discipline. This will be a good test for Fred early - to see how he coaches the team past a tough loss when we kept shooting ourselves in the foot.

I just watched it 37 times. He did not travel, not even close. Even Walters was shocked by the call.

To call that travel, right after the blatant travel by KA that wasn't called was the ball game. Had those calls been made correctly, we win the game.
