The Jamie Straube news is awesome! She's from the town that revkah and I lived in for a short while in Nebraska, so she has that extra sentimental value.

Also, watching her in 3 different matches (last year vs,. NE, this year vs. NDSU, this year vs. Texas), even without knowing a lot about volleyball, she is a completely different player right now, and showing massive improvement.

Her judgment around the net seems better, and she seems like she's becoming a kill machine up there. Her intensity and confidence seem like they are going through the roof.

I agree, and reading the quotes from CJL about the NCAA tournament and becoming more aggressive, I'd bet that Straube is going to be counted on a lot this weekend.

Straube and Hockaday will be a lethal combo next year.

This might be the time to get those season tickets. I'm right on the fence. Just have to see what it looks like come fall and thesis time.

No killer instinct. The one person willing to take a swing with a game on the line is the person sitting on the sidelines watching right now.

*Note: Volleyball player's opinion here...not solely mine, but after watching games this year, who is the leader? Mass and Vic are both WAY too quiet (which is disappointing from seniors), Straube is too quiet, etc. The only person who talks on the floor is Carly, and even she gets into a funk occasionally and you can see her overthinking.

Of course, quality sets would solve a BUNCH of these issues. Passing and setting were suspect earlier in the year...now the setting is just plain bad. Landwehr HAS to do a better job or we'll be leaving the tournament early.

Agreed. I havent been able to watch the team as much as past years, but when I have there is no leadership or killer instinct like you said. We definitely are missing having Hockaday on the floor. I think Landwehr will continue to get better, but i think a few players may have peaked with potential that we saw two years ago.

Some of it is that Landwehr just has enormous shoes to fill. She replaced the best setter in Iowa State history who didn't ever seem to make mistakes (Kaylee Manns). She also lost the best OH on the roster. Carly Jenson ended up being baptized by fire.

I do think next year Hock and Tenisha are going to be a hell of a tandem, with Stadick and Straube still around too. Gonna be hard to replace Mass though.

That's why I say the team misses setter Kaylee Manns (graduation) more than Hockaday. CJL is known around the country as a great setting coach, we all hoped things would still continue at a high level this year.
Texas has great big hitters, and always have, but their setting and passing the last two years has been greatly improved. Their players attribute that to new assistant coach (and former all-America setter) Salima Rockwell, who came to Austin from Penn State.

There isn't a team out there that could replace Maas, given that she's been the best around the Big 12 for 3 seasons now.

I hope she finds a rythym soon. I will be surprised if she is the setter next year. I know of at least three scouting/recruiting trips in the last month looking for a setter for next year.

Stadick will really have to work to hit the floor, imo. Straube has to get out of that soft hitting position, kind of half steps. Willms is coming off her redshirt. She's/could be a big hitter. This team will be loaded at the net, I hope. I would like them to be a better blocking team. Mass kind of went through a lull when we lost some matches. Have to play the spot to find out, don't know about the youngsters.
