Why to be excited, why to be wary

In the Big 12 ISU is currently:

    2nd in Scoring Offense at 84.3 Pts/G
    6th in Scoring Defense at 58.7 Pts/G
2nd in Scoring Margin at +25.7
    8th in Free Throw % at .682
    3rd in FG % at .503
    2nd in FG % Defense at .358
    1st in 3 pt FG % at .442
    2nd in 3 pt FG % Defense at .283
    4th in Rebounding at 40.5/G
    8th in Rebounding Defense at 33.0/ G
5th in Rebounding Margin at +7.5
4th in Blocked shots at 5.33/G
    2nd in Assists at 18.17/G
    5th in Steals at 7.83/G
4th in Turnover Margin at +4.67
2nd in Assist to Turnover Ratio at 1.65
6th in Offensive Rebounds at 12.00/G
4th in Defensive Rebounds at 28.50/G
    7th in Defensive Rebound % at 0.707
    7th in Offensive Rebound % at 0.362
    1st in 3 pt FG Made at 9.5/ G

No other team in the conference is in the top 6 of all statistical categories as much as Iowa State who only falls in the lower half in four categories. Kansas falls in the lower half five times.

Some can argue that it is too early and we have played weak opponents. The fact is that so has a lot of other teams in the Big 12. In fact we currently sit in the 90's in SOS. That puts us in 4th behind Kansas, Kansas St. and Texas for the highest SOS in the Big 12 (Colorado is at the bottom with a SOS of under 300). (If anyone wants a fun read, RealTimeRPI.com Iowa St. Cyclones Men's College Basketball Rating Percentage Index (RPI) Ratings - A leading sports ratings and resources community on the Internet predictor.)

    Why to be wary,
Last year we started 6-0 to similar teams before losing 3 straight to post season teams. Also in Mac's first year we won 6 before losing 3 straight to teams that didn't even make the post season. Granted in those years we didn't have Creighton caliber teams in those 6 wins, but Creighton also underwent a coaching change in this past off season so what might look like a good start by them could quickly fizzle.

One thing is for sure, if this team starts 8-0, Fred should get Coach of the Year!

Re: Why to be excited, why to be wary

It's hard not to be excited. If we take care of UNI and hang around with Cal (win or lose) we could be looking at 7-1 or 8-0.

Keep in mind, many of us were discussing 8 wins total this season. I'm curbing my enthusiasm for now, and just enjoying the ride.

I say COY if we make any sort of postseason.

If we make postseason, at least Big 12 Coach of the Year. At least that.

I definitely disagree that 8-0 = COY. We could easily end up 12-19 or something once Big 12 season hits.

I wouldn't use RPI yet, I don't think there is enough data for it.

Looking at kenpom's rankings, our SOS is 284, which seems about right given who we have played. (He has Colorado at 309).

Re: Why to be excited, why to be wary

RPI has us down for 21 wins. Several close games.

Actually, our wins have been with wider margins which makes the last three minutes less dramatic except for the CU game. We have a better team this year. Need to keep JVB on the floor though. He is essential.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

Call me Debbie downer but the award isn't called "coach of pre conference season".

Fred is doing a nice job so far but any coy talk is silly until end of season.

Curious what their record is against our scout team?

I'm thinking that stat would place us 12th in the league for wins against the scout team in practice.

Re: Why to be excited, why to be wary

The thing that scares me the most is once we get into conference play, how is our teams legs gonna hold up. Playing 8 to 9 guys every game is eventually gonna take a toll on our guys. IMO

According to Fred on the post game interviews, the last 2 games the scout team has "dominated" the starters. Not sure if that is good or bad, but so far seems to be working.

Excited: Other teams are struggling with bad teams.
