    Hawkeye water

I know the fans over in Iowa City think they are going to win the Big 11 and national championship every year, and we have grown to expect that. But I was amazed last August with the number of Cyclone fans on this board that bought into they hype this year as well. I did somewhat as I had them at #20. Even that was too high!!

So next year, when Iowa will be overrated again, Cyclone fans need to be the fans of reason. In 2011 Iowa will again be the best average team that money can buy.

    Re: Hawkeye water

Iowa was a good team, much better than ISU. I believe their main problem is the motivation: after losing to Badgers they realized that the dream of NC or BCS bowl was gone.

    Re: Hawkeye water

I don't understand why it was so hard to expect this team to perform well when they had just won the Orange Bowl, and were bringing back a majority of that team back. We had what was supposed to be one of the strongest DLs and secondaries, and though the LBs were in question, Iowa's history at reloading at the position was pretty good. On the offense, you had questions at the OL, but had depth and experience across the rest of the offensive positions. Kicking was a concern on special teams, but the other aspects of the special teams weren't expected to suffer.

On paper, there was absolutely NO reason to believe this would be a 7-5 (damn near 6-6 team). Personally, I felt a miracle or twenty would be needed for a NCG shot, but a Big Ten title, a trip to the Rose Bowl or another BCS game wasn't out of the question. My own preseason prediction was 11-1 at best or 9-3 at worst.

And to look back, it wasn't like the Hawks weren't in a position to finish 12-0 either. I mean, in all 5 of their losses (and against Indiana), they were either tied or led their opposition late in the 4th quarter, but managed to squander away the lead on defense before collapsing on offense.

Am I saying this was a 12-0 team and that things "just didn't go our way"? No. We had clear holes in the team. Special teams was a mess, from the kicking to the coverage to even the returns (though for the first time in recent memory, we actually have had 2 TDs on special teams in consecutive seasons). The linebackers was perhaps the biggest weak link in the defense, opening up a large section of the field for offenses to pass the ball while avoiding Iowa's predictable 4-man rush. The cornerbacks showed their inexperience. The running back position was decimated (again). And finally, Stanzi, while having a statistically better year, seemed to struggle more than he did last year, especially in the fourth quarter. Still, we weren't blown out of the water or anything. All the games were completely winnable, and more often than not, were in Iowa's hands to win (we had the ball last in all of our losses).

EDIT: Technically, in many of our losses, the opposition had the ball last, but those were usually kneel down situations. But still.

You know, Iowa finished in the top 8 four times since 2002. That's 50% of the time over the course of 8 years.

If that's average, I'll take it.

Oh, and since 2002, Iowa is 77-37 (average of 8-4), with four 10 win seasons, a BCS bowl win, and a 4-4 record in bowl games.

    Re: Hawkeye water

Iowa just didn't figure out what was so "special" about Special Teams:

Wisconsin - blocked extra point & missed field goal, Iowa loses by 4
Arizona - AZ kickoff return for TD and Iowa misses XP, Iowa loses by 7
Ohio State - Iowa misses FG, Iowa loses by 3

    Minnesota onside - kick, recovers
    EIU - fake punt, TD
Wisconsin - Fake punt leading to game winning TD

Special teams were a disaster this year, and can be pointed to as a large cause for 3 losses (AZ, WI, and OSU). Minnesota... well, Iowa just flat out sucked it up.

Don't forget the blocked punt that set up Arizona's first TD.

Actually, Iowa lost by 1 which made that game even more upsetting.

You're right - I forgot about that. I was still on a high from the Texas game while my brother was yelling at the Iowa-Wiscy game.

Its alright, I always discount the pre- Dmac and Chizik years when talking about ISU football. Unless I'm talking about the 2007 Cy-hawk game.

Traditionally in the past decade Iowa had played at the level of their opponents. That has been their biggest problem in my eyes. When they have a lot of hype to perform well and have a good year, they don't. When they have lower expectations they have a good year. Just my observation.

You're really going to include plays from an intra-squad scrimmage???

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.
