    First Game was Saturday

    My thoughts

Godfrey-Knows his role very well right now. I would also hate to get into a fight with that guy. He just looks the Charles Oakley part.

Ejim-Is going to end up being a superstar in the big 12. Still early and he will make some mistakes

Anderson- Plays kind of the Curtis Stinson role. Get's rebounds under the boards and gets great garbage put backs like Stinson did.

Railey- Could end being a good role player

Diante-Not even close to being the same player as the last 3 years. It's actually incredible how much different his game has changed over the last year. Basically was stuck in a system that did not fit his game at all.

Christopherson-Doing what I wished he would do that last year. Making 3 pointers.

It's definitely because we spread the floor which opens up lanes for him to drive through. Under Greg, we were always packing it inside and trying to feed the post from the wing. Was it any wonder Diante was at his best last year when Craig fouled out against KSU?

No, not at all. I just think that his explosion so far this year shows how much his talent has been wasted before, which mostly means I'm beating a dead horse.

I like his game, and I did notice his attitude and facial expressions. I hope he is happy at Iowa State and likes playing on this team; didn't seem to come across that way - he seemed disgruntled....hope I'm not "reading" too much into it.

Is anyone else a little concerned about how we are going to attack the match-up zone this season? Anyone that plays the same defense as Montana State with better athletes will give us fits.

I'm less concerned than I'd be if we hadn't seen it against them.
I think the odds that every shooter struggles against it again aren't very high, but it could happen like that again.

So I guess a little, but not a lot yet.

I agree that the off shooting first half probably made it look a little worse than it really was but I was surprised at how little we attacked the soft spots of the zone with entry passes and instead attempted to attack them with dribble penetration.

The strength of the team is definitely in the back court. I'm not sure we have the post presense to score from the post in one on one situations. We're good at scoring once the guard has drawn the post defender by we don't have much when it comes to scoring in the post when the defender is still in position. Hopefully we can develop some post play throughout the season because people are going to take away dribble penetration and force our posts to beat them.

2nd half was much better, I am sure the staff will have a plan on how to attack the zone, because we will definitely see it again. It's not like we weren't getting shots, they just didn't go in.

These are good points. I'm not real surprised at how much dribble penetration we were attempting, because everything we're doing comes off of that right now.

It will be interesting to see how we adapt when dribble penetration isn't there at all. It seems pretty obvious to say this, but that's going to be a difficult part for us.

If you saw him during player introductions I don't think you would worry about if he is happy here.

    Re: First Game was Saturday

It was my first game Saturday too. I think that when we see more athletic teams with some height they will give us fits. Also our guys were screened off a lot and help side came down leaving their man open a lot for the kickout pass. They did this a lot and didn't hit the wide open shots or it would have been really close. I wonder if they are not supposed to hedge on the screens to slow the guy down or double him up? An inside threat would be great since we have so many outside shooters. Ejim can really sky and has good basketball sense. We still need to finish at the basket better, lots of great moves and then miss the shot. Very athletic exciting team.

    Re: First Game was Saturday

Sometimes the quickest way to beat a zone is to hit a few perimeter shots. Make a couple threes and they will come out of the zone pretty quick. However don't make those right away and it becomes a little more difficult. But it was good to see it against Montana State and we now have tape to look at and figure a few things out for when we aren't hitting shots.
