This year's underclassmen how do they fit into next year's team.

Now that we've seen this year's team in a handful of games I was wondering what everyone thought on how these guys fit in next year.

So far I've seen Fred liking the lineup to be versatile. Meaning flexing Ejim between the 3 and 4. Resulting in the 6th man getting near starter minutes. Positions being PG, CG, SG, Fwd, PF, Post.

Ejim should be the returner that gets the most minutes. However adding Cook as another player that can fill the Fwd role allows Ejim to rest when needed.

SC, I see him and Babb battling for the same minutes all year long at SG with the hot shooter getting the minutes on that given night.

DP, I see him ending up as Allen's back up at CG. Odunsi or McGee may push him for this time though.

Godfrey, this is the guy that I've been most surprised with. Prior to the season I thought he'd back up Booker at the Post. Now I'm questioning if Booker can hold Godfrey off.

Railey, without a huge improvement will again back up the Post and play no more than 10 minutes per game.

McKnight, hopefully sometime down the road contributes but next year doesn't seem likely.

Palo, this could be interesting. Every other PG will be new to the team next year.
Bubu has a big advantage running the scout team. As far as next year is concerned that could be more of an advantage than running the starting unit. Early I think he'll get nice minutes but as the season rolls I think he'll be battling for scrap minutes at PG and CG.

Just to clarify I see McGee starting at PG backed up by Sledge. However if they both are the real deal it's possible Allen, Sledge and McGee could end up in a 3 man rotation with McGee seeing minutes at PG and CG. This is even more speculative than the rest due to the PG prospects being recruits for next season.

At least two people that could be getting minutes will redshirt. Why waste a year for 5-10 min a game. Odunsi and McKnight and I wouldn't mind seeing Cook get a year under his belt.

I don't think you red-shirt guys unless they need it. When you start red-shirting a large portion of your class it hurts recruiting. Odunsi and Sledge are both PG prospects in the 2011 class, odds are one will survive. As long as they both got a chance to earn the spot I don't think either would have an issue with this. I think we'll do the same thing in 2012 at the 2 guard position. That said if McKnight and Railey return I think each could benefit from a red-shirt year.

In every thread that looks ahead to next year, I'm not sure Scotty gets enough love.

How much does he need? He and Babb have a similar skill set.
They both fit nicely as a 3 guard. If SC is better than Babb he'll
play more but that has yet to be determined.

I love Babb as much as the next guy, but I think what needs to be determined is if he's as good as Christopherson.

I'm marking down Scotty, Ejim, White and Allen as starters, getting major minutes.
I don't think we'll see much of Phillips, Palu, Railey, Mcnight and Odunsi.

Odunsi just scored 27 and 31 (against a Texas recruit) his last two games. He might be a player.....

We do need to get back to red shirting where we can (but probably won't happen as much as it used to).

I think Freddie will take advantage of his depth to ratchet up the intensity that much higher. I think minutes will vary based on match ups, and who has the hot hand on a given night.

Redshirting simply does not happen anymore.

I'm marking down "Fred's Choice" as starters...and, oddly enough, as reserves! For that matter, I'm certainly not going to dismiss any player based on how they look now--a year of development could make a huge amount of difference!

our fanbase is obsessed with redshirting. i swear we could have a team of 6 guys and someone would debate who the 6th man is that gets redshirted.

Yup, basically if someone's going to be able to contribute at all, they will play.

Re: This year's underclassmen how do they fit into next year's team.

Redshirting is a tricky thing. So many reason not too. First off, the player has to agree. If he doesn't, you'll just alienate him. Second, he has to have a good future. Would you rather redshirt him and get an extra year or do you want him out in 4 years to open up the scholly.

I don't think you can look at this years rotation and glean too much. If enough good players are available, I bet Hoiberg will play 9 or 10 guys.
