Twister Sister Summary - ISU picks up ugly win

One word you will read quite frequently in this summary is "ugly." That was exactly what you call a game when you have 17 turnovers and only hit 60% from the charity stripe. Pop struggled early missing some fairly routine bunnies. It was a very messy start as the game started with 3 straight turnovers. TCU was cold, cold, cold and ISU's defense working its magic as we ran to an 11-3 lead 7 minutes into the game. Not very pretty with turnovers galore. TCU was hitting only 9% and it was time for a quick timeout. It seems that TCU wants to live at the 3 point line today as they have only taken one of their 12 shots from inside the arch. Amazing.

Things continued to be ugly for ISU on the rebounding front as we kept getting our butts beat for lose balls. Our bigs aren't moving well, and continue to miss short shots. We were getting position and getting the feeds to the bigs and they were just stone cold. The name of the game for the ladies in the first half was lack of focused hustle and turnovers. This is the first game where Big C has looked out of sorts. She was turning the ball over at a career pace. The only player that seemed to show up ready for the challenge was Bolte.

TCU kept right on firing from the 3 point line and started to heat up enough to take the lead late in the half as the Sisters kept fouling, turning the ball over and just plain missing shots. TCU didn't face those same mistakes as they didn't even put ISU in the bonus while making 7 charity shots of their own. Folks, we knew a half like this was going to happen with our newbies and this was as ugly as I've see the ladies play this year.

There was a brief flurry in the last two minutes of the half where both teams scored at will and the ladies held a narrow 1 point lead at the break. Ugly, ugly, ugly. If you looked at the stat line you'd swear ISU was pounding TCU. We actually were leading in rebounds although you'd not know it watching this thing. TCU had 5 steals combined with our 9 turnovers. ISU had zero free throws. Did I say ugly?

I was hoping for some great motivational speech and adjustments by Fennelly at the half.

You had to wonder what was happening today? Was it a full moon? Too much turkey on the beach for the ladies? The two players that didn't seem to be affected by the beach stay were Bolte and Loz. The second half was a continuation of the first for Pop and our other interior players as we continued to miss bunny shots. TCU wasn't missing as they took advantage of turnovers and misses to score and slowly build a 7 point lead. One thing that TCU likes as much or more than ISU is the 3 point shot. They just kept putting them up and were getting them early on in this half.

It stayed at just that distance for much of the middle of this half. Just an ugly game period as ISU and TCU had multiple turnovers. Add to that our Sisters kept missing free throws!!! ISU slowly clawed their way back with a layup by Big C and a 3 pointer by Bolte. All of a sudden it was a 2 point game and it seemed, incorrectly, that ISU had the momentum. Instead we started missing and turned the ball over again. Does Bill have any hair left?

What happened was Loz came alive. She hit THREE huge three point shots and all of a sudden the Sisters were in front by two. But no…it didn't stop there as Loz was on fire. Another three. Bolte followed with another three. Yes, folks that was five straight three point shots by ISU as they forged ahead by 6.

The last few minutes of this game we saw a chance to put a team away when the ladies clawed to a 58-51 lead and then….TCU came right back to draw within 3. They just kept putting up threes at what seemed a record pace. When they finally started to miss and we got fouled the old "miss a charity shot" thing reappeared when Cole missed the back side of a one and one. To add insult to injury she also had a huge turnover when we again had a chance to add some ice nursing a 4 point lead with 20 seconds left. Instead TCU continued to hit their free throws after a Bolte foul and things got very interesting in a hurry. When did our team become this horrible free throw shooting team? The end was crazy as TCU fouled, Bolte nailed her free throws like the senior she is and Mansfield blocked the final TCU three point attempt. What a nail biter. Somehow…despite the mistakes…our ladies of the high wind got a huge, huge victory over a ranked opponent 64-59. What a hard fought, gritty win for the Twister Sisters.

Bolte and Mansfield were our stars scoring 19 and 20 points. Mansfield is the one that broke the game open for ISU and Bolte kept us in it. Our bigs only made 7 of 20 shots and most of the misses were close in. Not a good day there. Big C fell to earth hard today. She scored 7 but had 6 turnovers. This one will be a good lesson for her early in her career.

Tidbit of the game - TCU launched 37 3 point shots and made 12.
Second tidbit - TCU used an ISU playbook and made more free throws than we attempted (11 versus 10).

Scary note - ISU continues to struggle from the free throw line hitting only 60%. Not good ladies. Spend some time practicing.

Tomorrow should be interesting. Did the Sisters get the "bad" game out of their system? Will the bigs reappear tomorrow? One thing they should expect is to be fouled. That is part of WVU's mo. The question is…will we make the free throws when it happens? Till then….

No such thing as an ugly win. Also, 60% on ft's sounds bad, but if we only shot 10 of them, it's a pretty small sample size. 70% sounds much better, but it's only 1 more point. Thanks for the summary. Big test against WVU tomorrow.

What made the misses "bad" was when they happened. You make a great point, but this is becoming the norm for this team whether we shoot 10 or 20 free throws.

I agree with others as well. Never said it was a bad win...just ugly. Nice test for the newbies and Loz obviously stepped up. I'm more worried about the sophomores right now.

Agreed. Timing is everything. Hopefully they find their stroke at the line as the season wears on. They'll need every point they can get against WVU.

Lost in the messiness of the game is the fact that ISU played very effective defense against a team that plays a style that could give the ISU defense fits.

No doubt Red. This was a team that came into the tournament averaging something like 89 points per game!

I suspect that we will see one thing that will be consistent all year long - our defense will prevail. That alone will give us a shot in any game against any team. Tomorrow will be a great test.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ISU picks up ugly win

A couple of positives in this ugly nightmare was Zimm hitting a big three and then for the last 5 or so minutes she played lights out D in the post with Hallie. That was something that Prins and Pops couldn't seem to manage. I liked the last minutes of the game with Chas handling the ball and Loz playing the off gaurd. Chas missed some freethrows and had a crucial turnover but she did setup both Bolte and Loz for some of those threes.

I am expecting a different starting lineup for tomorrow's game. If the posts don't bring their A game we will certainly have problems. WV plays a very physical brawling type game a lot like Baylor. When Geno says WV could win the Big East they have to be good. This will tell us how far we have to go as a team to be competitive in the B12. I am glad we are playing this game now and have sometime to work out the kinks before we start the B12 season. Tomorrow...Clones.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ISU picks up ugly win

With 20 pts. I think Mansfield has changed expectations about her. She does not just get assists - when needed she can score, inside and out. Our lineup will change, not only until players prove themselves, but, as the need changes. I suspect we'll see more of Poppens and Schroll tomorrow against the m/m defense I expect from WV. It will also give Mansfield a chance to show a different dimension. I hope to see her drive and score or dish.

As for the TCU game - it is what should have been expected and confirms the rankings - this was a match between two very similar and nearly equal teams and the team with the slightly higher ranking, won.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ISU picks up ugly win

the only thing that concerned me about this game was the turnovers. The free throw shooting, especially Chaz missing the front end of that one and one, hurt, but they survived.

Anna's foul trouble hurt the team offensively, but on the bright side, the team survived, and she isn't playing huge minutes, and hopefully allowing her to not get worn down too much.

I look for Pop to be a major contributor tomorrow. WV is very physical, and we need her.

Anyone know one of WV starting players hurt yesterday for WV will be playing today? When I caught the end of the WV/VA game, she had hurt her knee and was being iced down and didn't return to the game.

Nothing mentioned on WV's website about an injury or someone missing today's game (at this point).

On the play, she landed on one leg oddly and her knee went sideways. It looked pretty bad.
