Big News for Bears: Briggs nears agreement, could be in camp on time

    Can't say I didn't see this happening...

ESPN - Report: Bears, Briggs coming close to agreement - NFL

At one point, Lance Briggs said he would never play for the Chicago Bears again.

That stance may be a thing of past.

The Chicago Tribune reported that as of Tuesday night, there were strong indications the two sides were coming close to an agreement that would end a messy contract dispute and land Briggs in training camp on time.

According to the paper, Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the Bears have continued to negotiate even after the July 16 deadline for working out long-term contracts with franchise players. After a visit to Halas Hall last month, Rosenhaus said he had made some creative proposals to the team. But due to league rules, the sides can only agree to a one-year deal after the deadline.

The paper reported that one option was paying Briggs up front a large portion of the $7.2 million one-year contract the team tendered -- that would serve as a smaller signing bonus.

The Bears also have reportedly offered to rescind the franchise tag on Briggs for 2008 if he agrees to end the contract stalemate.

Reached by the newspaper on Tuesday night, Briggs declined to comment. But a teammate told the paper that Briggs had decided to sign and avoid a holdout.

Rosenhaus did not respond to inquiries by The Tribune.

Yeah, read the article this morning. This is huge news for them...would lessen the amount of things they have to work on. I'm glad they kept working towards a deal though and an agreement. Hopefully they have something in place long term that can be signed after the season.

that's huge. If he plays that means that that defense returns 10 out of eleven starters from last year. Tank Johnson being the one loss. That defense is going to be killer. Sometimes I think God hates the Vikings, and by proxy, me as well.

Unfortunately they lost Ian Scott too who started quite a few games and was highly underrated on the D-Line.

    1) his playing time was increased because of the injury to Tommie Harris, a guy who they get back this year.

    2) he had 22 tackles and no sacks in 15 games. Exactly how does that equate to "underrated?" I'd just call that 'rated.' He's not a scrub, but not a huge loss, either.

The coaches will be the first to say that Ian always took on two blockers, freeing the linebackers to run free... Plus he was my connection for free Bears tickets...

Ok, you got me there. I can't argue with free tickets.

Wow. That's good news. I honestly thought they would trade him just to get something out of the deal.

And when athlete say things...they are always subject to taking them back. All it takes is more money.

Meanwhile, the Bears make no move whatsoever at QB? No drafts, no trades. From what I've seen, the most important position on the team is being ignored.

I think Rexy gets a bad rap. Yeah he had some bad games. Yeah, he made a lot of mistakes. But, I've never seen a group of fans turn on their own as quickly as bears fans did last year. He's a young guy. He's been hurt most of his career. Remember, until the Arizona game last year, he was putting up some really good numbers. They were talking probowl for him. then after that turkey in the desert, the media just turned on him, and so did a good portion of his fans.

Re: Big News for Bears: Briggs nears agreement, could be in camp on time

That was one game - he took heat for it yet that didn't cause him to continue making mistakes the rest of the season - which he did. You don't want your QB to lose football games for you. Rex has done that.

I always liked the kid. Thought the Bears made a great pick. The injuries has been a very big part of his on-field disappointment. A big part. Early last season, I was defending Rex to a Bears fan I coach with. He was ripping on Rex before the season even started. I got a kick out of the first few games when Rex was tearing it up - this guy still didn't like him - saying "the real Rex will show up soon". Well, he did.

People perceive me being critical of Rex only directed at him. That's not really the case. I think the Bears should keep him - he's proven he can play - needs a lot of work though. When I'm critical of Rex, it's mostly directed at the Bears organization. They've been fouling up their QB situation for a number of years now. Clearly nothing has changed.

Do I think things would be different if Rex had been healthy for at least most of his NFL career? Yes. However, that doesn't mean the franchise should put all their eggs in his basket. They have a good team now. Not later, but right now. When you've got one position causing your problems - you have to do something about it. The Bears however, haven't done a thing.

It amazes me how they can keep all faith in a often-injured guy that keeps making mistakes (the same kinds of mistakes mind you). If that trends continues in '07 - expect the surrounding cast on both sides of the ball to start squawking. Many of these guys clearly are not satisfied by winning the North, the NFC or even just getting to the Super Bowl. They want to win it - and IMO - almost all of the pieces are there. Rex could be one of those pieces - but what if he's not?

I doubt it'll be ok to just show up in the big game to once again lose it as a result of poor QB play.

FYI, CW - now that I know my football schedule this fall, I'll be able to attend that battle between Dallas and Chicago. :) Now the "easy" part, finding tickets!

It looks like I'm getting tickets from my college roommate. If not, I'll go the ebay route although I can't imagine those will be cheap.

One of my best friends is a die-hard Cowboys fan (I don't think he spoke to me for 3 days after the Romo hold) so it would be great to get to watch them play each other.

I wasn't as upset as most following that game because...

    - It signified that season (Up, down, up, down)
    - Even if they won that one, with the Up, down season - I didn't see them advancing much further.
    - The game itself was kinda ugly enough neither team seemed to deserve it.
    - I think going through that embarrassment will further Romo's maturation process.
    - Play-off win or Carrie Underword. Hey, he got one of 'em - few people on Earth can say that!

And now he doesn't even have the latter. Still can't believe he ditched her.
