Was I still dreaming this morning?

This moring while waking up to the radio, a local sports broadcaster said Iowa State STILL has a chance to get to a bowl....even with 5 wins???

The story continued to say with the large amount of bowls, fewer bowl eligible teams than previous seasons, and with the travel history ISU fans have, they may be a pick to head somewhere??

Was I still dreaming this morning or can someone spell out how this is even remotely possible........

Re: Was I still dreaming this morning?

I think it's even more than a remote possibility. There's something like 16 or slots left open right now. It's an absolute joke. It's also why making a bowl game nowadays doesn't mean squat. I've almost convinced myself that I'll be surprised if we don't make a bowl game this year.

in regards to the possible bowl game, is the team still practicing?

can you practice until you are NOT invited? How does that work?

Technically, teams in any sport can practice until the National Championship game for that sport has been played.

Re: Was I still dreaming this morning?

I have really mixed feelings on this. I'm planning my holidays as though we aren't going to a bowl. 6-7 feels better than 5-7, but not much. We obviously have to take the bid in order to practice, and you can bet your *** I'm watching the game, but I doubt I'd go.

I really wish 5 win teams were not allowed into bowls.

I'd be in favor of this because we really need the extra practice and the seniors deserve it, but I'd be pretty embarrassed about playing in a bowl with a sub-500 record.

Re: Was I still dreaming this morning?

Ok, my numbers might not be exactly correct....but here we go.

35 bowl game (70 spots available)
65 teams already have 6 or 6+ wins

So that leaves 5 open spots.

There are roughly 20 teams that have not lost 7 games yet.
If 16 or more of these teams lose out,
Then there will be 1 or more spots open to a 5-7 Team.

ISU would have a decent shot, if they took a 5-7 team....but lets all remember that bowls take teams that will generate more money for them.....not the best team or the team with the best SOS (ISU).

Probably not going to happen..........but, there's a chance.

What was all that 1 in a Million talk............Lloyd Christmas.

Re: Was I still dreaming this morning?

I would only be embarrassed if we went to the bowl game and then got our butts handed to us by some other lonely mid-major team with a 7-5 record. But, if we get invited and go into the bowl game and destroy that 7-5 mid-major team we can solidify ourselves as a good team that just had a terribly hard schedule...

I still am not holding my breath though for us to make a bowl, I'm sure there will be enough teams that are bowl eligible to fill in the spots needed..

I'm not holding my breath, but if it means we get extra practices, another televised game, and maybe a little more revenue then we'd be fools not to jump on it.

Re: Was I still dreaming this morning?

I disagree. I'd say we accept any bowl invitation this year, regardless of the destination.

We had a 5-7 record against a schedule that included 6 teams that were at one time or another ranked in the top 10 in the nation! If there aren't enough teams to fill all the bowl slots, I do not know of another team that is more deserving than us.

I have a feeling it just might happen.

I'll take that one in a million chance! Another thing to add, if Texas loses to A&M (which seems likely), Texas will be at 5-7. A bowl would definitely select them over us so we might need two open slots to sneak in.

That makes sense but how come football coaches always talk about practice being such a benefit to bowl games? I know it would be hard to motivate a team to practice if the season is over but is that the only reason they dont?
