    GPS (question)

I have a Garmin GPS in my car. I've had it for about 3 years now, and I'd seriously like to get it updated. I have tried hooking it up to my computer, and going to a web-site to get it done, but no luck.

Is there someplace I can take it and pay to have it done?
    Thanx!

    Re: GPS (question)

Try the internet again, possibly the GPS store. I use that place for updates on my GPS devices all the time. If no luck, try taking it back to point of purchase and get help from them. I wonder why you can't do it online.

    Re: GPS (question)

We have a Garmin and I registerred for it online when we got it and we get emails a couple times a year on updating maps.

Here is the update page on Garmin's website.

    Garmin | Map Updates

Or click on the home page and hit the support tab. I did ours last summer for $69 and it took about 15 minutes to download the file and install it on the device.

    Re: GPS (question)

It's hard to justify a map update on a 3 year old Garmin. You can probably go out and buy a $100 garmin that has all the new maps plus more features. They need to seriously consider lowering the price of their map updates. With that said, I have a 2 year old Garmin that has a "maps for life" attached to it for both Europe and U.S. so I need to keep mine.

I used my Droid X for navigation the other day and was surprised how well it did.

The real question is what accent does your GPS speak and have you named her?

I had the same problem last week.

I went to the Garmin website and tried my damnedest to get an update. All I could figure is that there is that the model I have does not have an update available. Seems like a wasted opportunity to sell "product" to me, especially since the Garmin itself tells me my maps are old and need updated. I was actually going to see if there is an 800 number so I could talk to a real person.

Mine was a gift and I think it might have been an older model closeout at the time I received it = Christmas 2008.

    Re: GPS (question)

Have the maps really changed that much in 3 years? I view the thing like a glorified map book and I make those last 10 years before getting new ones. I've never had my Garmin not get me "close" to where I want to go.

Like some of the other posters have said, I'll probably go for a new one that will be cheaper when mine gets past it's prime.

    Re: GPS (question)

I use my Droid, and I haven't named her, but I swear at her a lot and tell her to shut up.

If I've arrived at my destination, don't start re-calculating on me when I'm driving around the parking lot

(Don't get me wrong, it's a useful tool, but it needs to learn to shut up)

    Re: GPS (question)

I got a Samsung Droid Thursday of last week and used the navigator app once and couldn't believe how good it works. Now I have to get a car cradle or something for it so I can use that. Our Garmin is in the van. The only reason I updated it was because our house was built in 2005 and the development we built in was not in the maps so I got it so we had our address in the unit. It has been pretty dependable.

The only thing I worry about those things is if I am going somewhere in a city I am not familiar with and have it direct me through a bad neighborhood since it is the fastest. I've heard some horror stories about that.

I can already see the new models:
    Avoid toll roads
    Avoid interstate
    Avoid the hood

The only thing I like about my TomTom is Droopy Dog's voice. Nearly impossible to understand, but still funny.

They must have. I borrowed my parents garmin which is probably 4-5 years old when I drove from Omaha to San Antonio and back this year. It told me countless times to turn right into cornfields.
