    Williams: Wild one at The Dub

    My final thoughts on today's 91-88 win over Creighton. Just now starting to catch my breath. Wow.

    Got to agree with you on both the atmosphere and the Creighton mascot. I was joking about the picture on the free shirt with my son, and it turned out to be a remarkable likeness.

    Kind of looks like Cy, if Cy was blue, had a long neck and no muscles.

    I've been to a Final Four (1989) and this atmosphere compares favorably.

    Hoiberg really shortened the bench today, but we've consistently played short handed before. During the '04-'05 campaign, it was usually about a 7-man rotation. Once DP gets healthy, I think his minutes will increase, and if Bubu can give DG a short rest here and there, that will go a long way. The Ejim/Godfrey platoon is working out well, but we're going to need Railey for about five minutes a game or JVB might collapse at some point. He's not built to play more than 25 minutes or so and it showed at several points today.

    I think the bench will stretch as the guys show more and develop. Well, until January, when freshmen so often hit the wall, but probably stretches again in February when (if?) they get their legs back.

    Ohio St. used a ridiculously thin rotation last year, playing only six guys in quite a few games down the stretch. DG, Jake and SC look conditioned enough to play heavy minutes, with DP or Bubu spelling them occasionally.

    On the inside, foul trouble worries me more than anything else. Between JVB, Ejim and Godfrey (and maybe Railey), they can probably withstand the rigors of all those minutes, but the way they play isn't going to be conducive to how tightly some contests will be called. There's going to be some point this season when Railey is going to have to play big minutes, and I hope he's ready for it.

    I was really hoping this was going to happen to their mascot:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgYg6gA3S58"]YouTube - Rice Owls Basketball - Amazing Happens: #3- Sammy[/ame]

    ...when he was there stepping on the sideline and looking at the ref during a timeout following that call that gave the ball back to us. There's a better video of this somewhere out there but I can't find it right now.

    It was just as awesome as you're thinking it was. Oh, man, that was a good Final Four.

    First OT championship game.

    Duke.

    Duke put on the best dunking exhibition during their open practice.

    I think they expected to sail on through the field, though, and that didn't work for them. They couldn't meet the Gaze of Seton Hall when they went eye-to-eye.

    As opposed to Cy's ****-eating grin (which cracks me up), the Blue Jay looked like he was about to take a final he forgot to study for. And his tail was apparently broken...just hung straight down and flopped back and forth. Although that will probably reflect their fan base's attitude after 4 years of McD.
