    2011 defensive starting lineup

    spinoff of the other thread.

    lets hear it

    nelson/maggit
    rumpolhammer/leing
    mcdonugh/woods
    lattimer/neal
    morton/george
    klein/tauofoou
    knott/??
    benton/mattison
    lj/reeves
    washington/broomfield
    brooks/givens

i think mattison plays a lot of the role currently filled by benton and benton moves to full time cb. so in our nickel we see lj, benton, mattison, washington, and brooks with klein and knott at lbs

I'm going with Givens and Bennett at the Safety spots.
I remember a comment that Givens was going to be redshirt because
they wanted him these next 2 years after the 3 seniors were gone.
As for Bennett, I just like the size, speed and was impressed by his videos.

I think Laing will give McDonough a run for his money at a d-tackle spot.

    Re: 2011 defensive starting lineup

Scary deal with the Dline is that as good as they were at the end of the season, Nelson has been said to be a monster in practice. Him and Lattimer next year will be HUGE

I'm hoping that Lattimer can put on 20-30 pounds (though not ala "The Program") and be a real beast next year now that he's found his natural position.

That's a lot to ask from a guy that's already been in our
    weight training program multiple years.

    Re: 2011 defensive starting lineup

This group could be very salty. I'm excited to see the progression through the offseason. On top of the experience and talent they bring back, depth is added from the red shirts and freshmen that will now take a larger role.

This DLine has the potential to be the best since the early 00's. Ruemp is the LOS brawler we've been crying out for. I think the rotation of Lattimer, Maggitt, Neal, Nelson, and Co. at DE will be a nice group. (Maggitt made some great plays on Saturday night)

    LBs will be nasty.

My biggest concern is safety position. Hopefully Washington can successfully transition back to the SS role and someone steps up to replace Mcconnell at FS.

I'm excited to see this group in action next year.

But at a different position. I don't think he moved to DE until fall practice (although I could be mistaken). I'm guessing the regiment is quite different for LBs and DEs.

    Re: 2011 defensive starting lineup

I thought the crazy 3-3-5 we played (or 3-2-6 as it was most of the time) looked pretty good. I wouldn't be surprised of we played a lot more 3-3-5 next year, especially since we should have more linebacker depth.

I was also disappointed how little George played this year, considering he didn't redshirt. I hope he can get to a point over the offseason where he can be a major contributor next year.

I agree. Since he was on special teams quite a bit I was hoping he'd have a similar role to what Knott and Klein had last year...stud on ST, back-up time at LB. Seems to have the physical tools but maybe hasn't picked up the LB scheme/playbook as quickly as Knott and Klein did. Hope for good things from JG next year.

That and having a little more padding (as long as it's not enough to slow you down) comes in a lot more handy on the line than as a linebacker. Adding 10-15 pounds of muscle and another 10 or so pounds of bulk is totally doable in a year for a guy in his early 20s even without having a proffesional training and nutrition staff.
