    Big 10 network - I'm torn

Ok, here's my take on the big 10 network thing.

I love college football. I hate Iowa, but enjoy watching them when ISU is not playing.

I think Big 10 network is greedy at $1.10 subscriber.

I like that mediacom is taking a stand, but I doubt it will work.

Basically these networks like fox and big10 are sticking it to cable subscribers because mediacom has no choice but to pass on the cost.

The other option is to cut some other channels from cable packages, but that is tough because often companies say "if you carry this popular network (comedy central for example) then you have to carry E! or Bravo or some other crap.

So its tough but ultimately the subscribers all pay. This type of arm-twisting can only go on so long.

Meanwhile, I either pay more, switch to satellite or miss my favorite sport.

If you are smart, you switch to DirecTV. What is the drawback?? All I hear is people complaining about Mediacom. Why do I never hear people complaining about DirecTV? It gives you the most versatility without question.

The BTN will be part of the base package on DirecTV, but my opinion is it should be on the sport's tier and be an extra charge for those who want it. I could give a hooey about BT also ran's.

    Re: Big 10 network - I'm torn

There are a few reasons I don't switch.

Number 1, mediacom does do some local programming for ISU, I believe there was 1 or 2 fb games carried when dish didn't get them and there is probably 5-8 bball games carried when dish didn't.

Number 2, I don't like the fact that you pay extra for extra receivers.

Number 3, Weather affects satellite reception. I have heard this from almost every person I know that has satellite.

Other than that, I agree, DirectTv is superior, especially when it comes to HD.

    Re: Big 10 network - I'm torn

I am sure I will watch some big 12 network, they will have some decent football games and I'm sure a ton of college baseball... That being said I still think the best place is on the sports tier with CSTV, ESPNU, and the Fox College stations, which I will be getting anyway...

I would love to switch to DirectTV, unfortunately my neighbors trees don't agree with me...

I miss Mediacom dearly for this reason. Satellite absolutely sucks.

here is another plus for mediacom. I made this post last night, but I stumbled across the fact they they have all of ISU's and iowa's 2006 games on demand that you can watch at anytime.

    Re: Big 10 network - I'm torn

I love Directv. I switched about 6 months ago and do not regret my decision at all. Well maybe once when I missed the last 10 minutes of the finale of LOST because of a storm. But that has been the only outage I have had.

The solution to missing football games only carried on Mediacom is simple...buy season tickets and GO to the game because I have yet to see an away game televised by Mediacom.

Why not? Mediacom's sports package costs like $4/month with digital cable. Even hawk fans shouldn't balk at that.

Because, Big 10 network knows the casual fans will not get that package (especially people w/out digital cable) So that is why they are pressing for the big 10 network on basic or extended cable - which would pass along costs to everyone and make them the most money.

The only way weather affects sat reception is if there is a monsoon going on. I never get rainfade unless I am watching ch8 to see if my house will still be there in the next 20 min. Then I just switch to local OTA, and watch ch8 anyway, so who cares about rainfade. I would bet $1000 that my directv has been available more than my neighbors cable. I am an HD nut, and I would not say that directv has good HD at all, it is overly compressed and there are very very few channels.

But in 2020 we might have dsm locals in HD over sat, but why do I care, my antenna works great.

Weather does affect satellite signals, maybe you are just lucky. My parents have satellite and have issues with rain, wind, snow. Its not all the time, but it happens now and then. I have heard from people that have much more trouble with it.

Plus, some people just can't get it due to obstructions.

Have you tried spraying SPAM on it?

    Re: Big 10 network - I'm torn

Out here, during the blizzard in March of 03, we were all stranded in our homes. It was humorous watching people in the neighborhood risking life and limb climbing on their roofs or ladders trying to brush the snow off their dish. This all happened again this december.

I realize it doesn't happen often, but when the weather is really bad outside is about the only time I watch TV (other than cyclone sports). If it doesn't work then, it's not a good fit for me.
