Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

Interesting to look at what type of players are committed to both schools right now. It appears that ISU is going for size, and players they can build up. Iowa is ranked higher, but their top rated recruits aren't very big. Here's a look
    ISU
    6-7 245
    6-2 190
    6-4 207
    6-6 238
    6-4 230
    6-4 285

    Iowa
    6-2 250
    5-10 209
    5-10 175
    5-10 159
    6-6 235
    5-11 172
I know its very early, but interesting trend. I get the feeling the average size of our players is going up quickly with Chizik vs. McCarney.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

I wouldn't read too much into that. A lot depends on what position the guys play. Mac recruited some monsters and that might have been a problem. The guys were too big and couldn't move. It would be interesting to compare 40 times of the guys coming in to guys at the same position in the past.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

I think the trend may just be a reflection of the need of each team rather than an overall recruiting philosiphy. But, I certainly won't complain about getting some more bruisers on the squad!

Way too early to read into the size of our players.

I don't think Chizik is going with size over speed. He has already stated that speed will be a big factor in their success.

I think it's easier to get kids bigger, than it is to get them faster.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

I wouldn't read into the size thing much. We had 300+ at nearly every position on the O-Line last year and look how bad it was. I'm more concerned about the quality and impact a player will have. Just because you are 6-4 285 doesn't mean you are going to be an All-Big 12 player. Again, I've said in the past I don't read much into recruiting rankings either because there is a biased that bad players sign with schools like us and the good ones with teams like Texas. But 1 thing I would hope to see is a few recruits that turned down a school like Texas or Oklahoma to come to ISU and so far we haven't had any news like that.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

Wait a minute is the trend in recruiting going towards 6'7 260lb DBs....I don't think so.

Each staff is recruiting differently. It is way to early to pick apart the recruiting classes. Maybe in Feb the discussion will be more appropriate but not in July.

In terms of ISU's recruiting it will be interesting to see how the O-line recruiting goes. What size type will they go after. Will it be the smaller more mobile lineman or the bigger road grader types? I've got a feeling it will be a mix of both just as long as they can protect the QB.

Well despite all of the "unprecedented success" of the previous coach, when did he ever take kids that UT or OU truly wanted???

The program, with its "unprecedented success" was ranked in the low 60's by ESPN. That has not, nor will it in the forseeable future attract top players.

It will take some REAL wins, that give us good pub to get these kids to take more than a quick look at us. Hopefully, Gene can get those wins early, so we can get the ball rolling.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

Here is a comparison using both rivals and scout for the speed of the recruits of Iowa vs. ISU

    ISU
    4.61
    4.95
    4.70
    4.4
    4.91
    5.08
    4.41
    Average
    4.723

    Iowa
    5.1
    4.42
    4.9
    4.44
    4.5
    4.8
    4.64
    Average
    4.686

So with all of those bigger players that were mentioned in the first post they average only 0.037 sec slower in their 40 times.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

I have observed that once the ball is in play there is much more to whether we win or lose than simply size or a star rating. What I am excited to see is what this coaching/strength & conditioning staff can do with the kids they do get. I keep looking at teams like Boise St., Rutgers, and Louisville to see what good/creative coaching can do without a team full of bluechippers.

Re: Iowa State vs. Iowa recruiting so far...

Am I the only one who believes we have enough talent to win 7-9 games each season, but we have been severely hamstrung by poor coaching?

Cyquest is right... Boise St., Rutgers and Louisville are usually outmatched on paper when it comes to talent, yet they still tend to compete with the Miami's and Oklahoma's of college football (and win!). They win through coaching strategy and adjustments.

    We can too.
