    Down Time

You know - this is another example of how we can tell that baseball isn't widely followed day to day and we can't wait for football season in general and our individual favorite teams (whether it be ISU or some pro team) to begin playing this fall/winter/spring...
I open up CF today and every headline on the front page had pretty much nothing to do with any sports or even ISU that much. These truly are the dog days of summer.
I love rooting for the Cubs, but I don't get the games down here in Dallas that often, and box score reading only gives me so much satisfaction...so here's to training camps opening up this week so I can hopefully find info on websites not related to Michael Vick, what the Yankees are going to do, and the Bonds HR chase, all the cheating in every sport (Basketball, cycling, baseball, and others we haven't heard of yet)...

ANyone else ready to be dowsed with actual sports again?

The Cubs have the day off - so there truly is nothing worth watching today.

I'm willing to hear arguments on how football ISN'T our national pastime, because it most certainly is.

NFL starting up camp tides me over until the real football season starts.

Being that they are one of the hottest teams in all of MLB right now - YES!
Although Arizona cooled us off a bit.

I don't even know if you can take arguments anymore...football is so widely played/attended/watched, etc all year round... everyone has some draw to it, for the most part.

training camps and preseason games hold me over til fall practice begins for colleges, and August excitement is truly enjoyable to me... I can't wait...

Still, it's baseball we're talking about here. Why do I have an Allen Iverson rant going through my head?

Very true... who is the NFL paying off to keep it quiet, because they have to have some of the longest steroid users - IMO. How has no one ever been busted or played up more...ie. Shawn Merriman last year...after those 4 games, everyone gave him a free pass. It was said and done...same with others...

    Who konws...good question though...

    Re: Down Time

I don't think the fact that there were no baseball threads on an Iowa State Cyclones forum is a very good gauge that people don't care about baseball. I for one love baseball, easily my favorite sport. However, I usually go to my Twins forum to talk baseball, rather than here. I still consider baseball America's pastime, but I won't deny the huge popularity of football. I'm a huge football fan myself (obviously), but I think it's silly to say that nobody cares about baseball. In recent years baseball has been consistantly breaking attendance and TV viewership records. Really, in terms of popularity, the game is at an all time high.

That being said, I'll continue to watch my Twins well in to October, but at the same time I can't wait for August 30th to roll around!

To each his own I guess. I enjoy football as much as the next guy but baseball will always be my first passion (other than my wife and kids of course). Truth is, we have several national past times, just depends on your perspective.

Exactly, when the reigning defensive MVP tests positive the apologists come out everywhere and when players want to speak out they are quickly muzzled by the league, heck, 1/5 th of a Super Bowl team tests positive or get busted with them (including the punter!?!?)and it's pushed to the middle of the sports page... However a minor league non prospect makes the crawl at the bottom of the screen and a little used utilty guy gets caught and it's a huge story...

Careful, Vick might release the hounds. Just don't get Donaghy to referee, or we'll never get a call

    Two thoughts.
    1) The NFL has had testing for 20 or so years. This gives the "apperance" of the league handling the issue, as with baseball it was swept under the rug for years.
    2) Baseball has aspects of individual play in a team sport(records), more than football.

    FYI, I enjoy both sports.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.
