    Coach/Fan love, or mere generosity?

With all the talk of ISU from past coaches, I started to wonder. Comments like "ISU will always be home," or "there's some of the best fans of the NCAA there," etc. I kind of wonder how many coaches say things like that about their past schools. It sounds a lot like when a band comes to town and tells you that Iowa has some of the best fans around to me. I've been to my share of Iowan rock shows, and many have said it, but I take it with a grain of salt. I know that not every coach will say it about every school, but how often does it happen, in your opinion? Would Orr go back to Michigan with similar sentiments? Will Morgan and DMac say similar things after the dust settles? Just something I was wondering about.

I pretty much agree with your grain of salt comment. In Larry's case, he might mean it just because of all the highs and lows he went through at this place, but generally I think it's fan love/ generousity. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

I'm not quite as skeptical on that one. I am sure that any coach who had a genuinely positive experience at a school probably has a special place in their heart for that school. With all the hard work they put in, the great memories, and the personal relationships that they develop, I don't think it would have to be something they just say. From a fan's perspective, a die hard fan has vicariously shared some personal highs and lows with that coach.

I am sure Morgan won't but I bet you a mortgage payment Dan thinks that way.

There is no way that Johnny feels that way towards Michigan. One of the main reasons he left there was they wouldn't give him more money...even after making the championship game.

I do think that LE probably feels the way he says he does. Otherwise, why come back? He had absolutely nothing to gain by coming back this weekend yet he did it.

First of all Johnny Orr is a Cyclone! His love is for ISU. I'm certain he has some fond thoughts of Michigan and his time there but he is a Cyclone.

As for Eustachy, I'm sure he looks back at his ISU time (especially the two good seasons) with a great deal of fondness...after all they were by far his best years as a coach.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Coach/Fan love, or mere generosity?

Keep in mind that LE's boys are still in Ames and that he comes back frequently to visit them. The constant returning probably refreshes all of the good memories that he had here and that helps to instill a greater fondness for ISU and, as cyclone#1 said, his tenure here were the best years of his coaching career so far.

I don't think Dan will hold any hard feelings against ISU. He spent over a decade here and had unprecidented success. There are a lot of fans that still like him and respect him for what he did here.

I agree, he had no motive to come back to ISU and take a gamble on how he would be received but he did which tells me he really does feel that way about ISU.

I for one was really surprised at the reception he got. I'm not sure how I feel about him now. He brought us some of our highest highs and lowest lows, which are still costing us today.

Of course, and for obvious reasons.

Actually Dan should be grateful to Iowa State for keeping him employed longer than anyone else in the country would have.

And I am sure that Earle Bruce and Johnny Majors have better things to do, but you should be careful Trav....they could sue you for slander for statements like that. Since both of them won, and went to bowl games that meant something.
