LE: "ISU will always be my school"

'tiny little text etched into her neck it said "jesus lived and died for all your sins." she's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back. it said: "damn right i'll rise again." yeah, damn right you'll rise again.'

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

Wow, what a great write-up. That is a fabulous column; I'm really glad to see it in the Rag. I'm not a huge fan of Keeler's hard news, but his soft news writing is absolutely the best at the Register, and some of the best in the state, IMHO. Sounds like Larry's leading a pretty good life for himself now. I wasn't here when he was, but he sounds like a guy I'd really like to meet someday.

    Thanks for the link.

I also enjoyed reading the article. There was even some Alford talk that was close as you're going to get as negative from Keeler.

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

Larry's presence at the event and this article have changed the way I think of LE. I have thought that the two great teams he coached were a result of the players he had on the court, specifically Tinsley...basically that any coach could have coached those teams with the same results. I thought he was overpaid and thought too highly of himself. For the future..I do believe that GM will have more consistency and better teams in a year or two than over the entire time LE was in Ames.

As a result of events this weekend (and the article), I have a lot more respect for LE both as a coach and as a human being. He is a good coach who will have a great career and, in my opinion, a much better human being. The ultimate compliment to ISU is that he still feels that Ames is home to him. Kudos to the fans on hand at Hilton to treat him with the respect he deserves.

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

One thing I thought was interesting was that it was Fred Hoiberg that talked him into coaching one of the teams. He said that him and Fred were pretty close friends.

I thought that was pretty cool and it showed during the game.

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

Great article. I've always like Larry. Even on his way out, I really felt he was an alcoholic and didn't make it all up as an excuse as some thought. I don't think he deserved another chance but I do think he could have gone out differently that would have caused less embarassment to the the school and Larry.

And for anyone he didn't think larry was a good coach, check out his coaching record at each place he has coached. He always won. I don't think it was coincidence.

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

Those championship teams werent coaching themselves, no matter how many one liners LE threw out at them. He was still the coach that made it happen, he kept those guys together, did every step to make sure they would be there to do the job. You can have all the talent in the world, but without a mentor, or someone there to call the shots and control the game, they arent worth much. That is why there is so much optimism surrounding this years football team. The folks whom believe Dan McCarney wasnt calling shots right or was being conservative, shed new light on Coach Chizik and the remaning talent that we have, One of our greatest QBs of all time and one of our Best WR of all time, not to mention probably an all american Linebacker in Alvin Bowen. We have the talent, it needs to be harnessed and we need to put the power to the ground. I loved having LE as a coach. Great Guy when it comes down too it, i was glad to hear he was back on the floor at Hilton.

Better teams at ISU in a couple of years than the team with Fizer and Tinsley? WOW, you have high expectations. I doubt that will happen in a couple of years and I would be satisfied if they could even match that team, ever.

He means that we won't have all of this success, and then fall off a cliff the next year.

It was good to see Larry. I think that he enjoyed himself very much, and it showed. There will always be a lot of Cyclone in Larry.

Whatever happened, is in the past. Unfortunately, he had to leave. His comments on BVD were pretty telling as well.

Great article. Thanks for posting it! I've got my Southern Miss hat mixed right in there with all my Cyclone hats. He meant a lot to ISU.

Re: LE: "ISU will always be my school"

From all the pictures I've seen Larry looks really good. Always liked him and hope he has great success. Southern Mississippi is fortunate to have such a great coach and even more fortunate if he has success there and they can keep him from going to a bigger school.

Really wish I could have gone to that game even before they announced LE was coming but had already made plans.
