Thank you for making me feel OLD

I was on the Cory Johnson thread over on General College Sports earlier today, and when I made a joking reference to Brad Dudek, the poster I directed it towards replied with "Dude, I don't know who you're talking about".

If anyone needs me, I'll be down at the Perkins for the Early Bird Senior Citizens Discount. I'd also appreciate it if you'd tell all those darn neighborhood kids to STAY THE **** OFF MY LAWN!

Yeah, that's the ticket. Early 80's?

I remember going to the Morgan State game in December '84 (the one where Barry Stevens set the single-game scoring record with 42 points), and the crowd spent the last 3 or 4 minutes chanting "DuuuuuuDEK! DuuuuuuuuuDEK!" He was Greg Hester before Hester was Hester.

The other young player who got some PT against Morgan State that night? Lafester Rhodes.

Oh ****. Now this is just sad. Nothing against what you put down personally. Just sad is all.

Time for the Iowa State athletic department to start selling these seasons on DVD.

I guess I did not realize Dudek went onto play t ISU.....speaking of Minnesota bred big white dudes who played at ISu, do you remember Ron Falenschak? He came from my hometown...Brainerd, Minnesota. I remember in the high school locker room there was an ISU poster of big Ron....first I had heard of ISU.

LOL I know what you mean. I was born and raised in Ames. Almost 30 now and can remember the Mayor on TV. I knew he was a big deal but was still extremely young.
I know others on here have wondered why the current students may not be super excited for him but just thing about where the current students are when the Mayor was wearing cardinal and gold! I hope he builds things up and gets the place rocking again.

Re: Thank you for making me feel OLD

Big Ron? Yeah, I remember him. My brother in law ran into Johnny Orr at a promotional event a few years ago and asked him what Ron is up to nowadays. Johnny told him that Ron's a taxidermist in Minnesota. I guess Johnny really likes to talk about Ron, so ask him about him next time you see him.

Speaking of Big Minnesota Dudes, Bryan Heger lived on my dorm floor. Heckofa nice guy, even though he didn't play much. As he explained to us one night ..... "My job is to get really good grades and play hard in practice." He got an engineering degree, and he's currently living in the Twin Cities area last time I talked to him (we were at a mutual friend's wedding about 10 years ago).

I'll tell my Dad you said hi. He was there from 64-68, and he still talks about games at the Armory. He says that they sometimes had to stop the game once or twice because drunks would climb over to the backboard from the stands and try to swat away shots. I worked at Outdoor Recreation when it was still located in the Armory, and I can just imagine what it would be like to watch a college game there.

Whoever was responsible for converting the basketball court at the Armory over to studios for Architecture & Design students should have his *** kicked repeatedly. That was a freakin' piece of history, and ISU just flushed it away.

I don't remember apologizing Bob, but I am sorry. And drunk. If it makes you feel any better, I was a freshman at ISU during Hoiberg's senior year.

Re: Thank you for making me feel OLD

I'm a senior this year, and I was 4 years old when I went to my first ISU game. Kept the program next to my bed for a couple of years. It had Fred and Johnny on the front. That was back when they actually had the slick programs that were more than just a scorekeeping sheet, but I can't remember for sure if they had started the fold-out posters on the inside yet like they had up until about 4-5 years ago. My bedroom used to be covered in those posters as a kid! Anyway, that was the 93-94 season. So, I understand how you feel old. I'm about as die-hard of a student fan as you'll find (in my opinion), and I've been around ISU forever, but I was only in kindergarten when Fred graduated. It's going to take a while for the "magic" to come back.

Your post got me thinking: I wish I could have been around for the start of "Hilton Magic". My dad, in his great wisdom, happened to videotape the '87 ISU-Iowa game because he was out of town, so I grew up watching that thing OVER and OVER and absorbing the magic. The 2000 Texas and Oklahoma State games are moments I'll never forget; I stood out in the aisle of one of the balcony corner sections and jumped up and down every time something great happened. Seeing Fizer's last game at Hilton was priceless, and every time I'm back in Hilton, I look up at that section because the memories were so powerful. I hope we can get back to that level of intensity, where you could feel the building moving and you couldn't hear anything other than the screaming of the crowd. I think Fred will get us back there, though.

My first ISU basketball game - Fred Hoiberg was on the court.
My first ISU football game - Paul Rhoads was on the sidelines.
But they hadn't yet reached their full potential.

SO PROUD that things have come full circle. #cyclONEnation
