Jake Knott - 1st Team All American...

this should be a slam dunk....lets break down the numbers...

Tackles - 10th in the nation (Leading the big 12).
Solo Tackles - T 9th in the nation.
Passes Defended - 73rd in the nation (5th highest amoung LB)
Interceptions - T 35th in the nation (2nd amongst LB)
Forced Fumbles - T-18th in the nation. (9th among LB)

No other LB in the nation is ranked remotely close to these numbers across the board - and i'm not making a joke - ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE....Those that have a lot of tackles have far fewer forced fumbles and interceptions. Those that excel at the forced fumbles and interceptions have far fewer tackles...a true testament to his overall game.

Not to bash on AJ Klein as he's had a spectacular season. I personally think his numbers would have been up closer to Jake's overall had he not moved inside after Matt's injury.

But, for a position that everyone including myself was skeptical a bit heading into the season, these two guys have performed. Now that said, i looked over the lists to see which hawkeyes were up there....it was weird that statistically there were very few hawks on these lists. IMO thats because of their team concept, that the stops are spread out more evenly between the different levels and thus are a more sound defense.

Regardless - need one more fantastic game out of these two studs to see if we can go practice some more!!!!!

I wish AA was based on pure stats. It's too bad the media darlings always make the cut.

I'm impressed though and no doubt Knott and Klein will get big attention heading into next year.

Knott will be hard pressed to make First Team All Big XII let alone All American.

Love the guy, and he has a bright future, but it isn't all about stats.

Was Alvin Bowen even named All-American when he led the nation in tackles?

Re: Jake Knott - 1st Team All American...

Knott has been huge this year. I recall quite a bit of buzz around the team that the LB's were going to be solid this year. That prognostication was spot on.

If the D-line can just get some more productions next year, this defense could be VERY salty.

You are right. It is also about a team's record and how old you are. A JR or SR will get the nod over him. With that said, there isn't one LB I would trade him for right now in the Big 12 and I mean that. We get this kid for 2 more years and he is only going to get better.

Agreed. And I think we've begun to see positive steps on the DL, even taking into account the Colorado game. IIRC, Wally has mentioned that Rony Nelson has been one of the players to stand out on the scout team, so if you add him to Lattimer, Ruempolhamer, and McDonough, we could have a solid starting four on the DL next year.

Depth will still likely be an issue, but its a step in the right direction.

Alvin Bowen was not even named All-American.

    He was 2nd team All-Big 12 in '06 and '07.

Tackles aren't a good stat. You can be the best linebacker in the country and not have many tackles because your line plugs everything up.

Re: Jake Knott - 1st Team All American...

Jake Knott is a very good player, but he is nowhere near a game changer. Making a bunch of tackles five yards down field is not All-American worthy.

To be an All-American the opposing team has to be afraid of running or throwing their way, because they are that good. Jake is not at that level, maybe by his senior year he could be second team All-American. He should make atleast the second-team Big 12 this year though. The Big 12 doesn't really have any dominant LB's this year. Maybe Von Miller, but he's more of a DE.

Re: Jake Knott - 1st Team All American...

I'm really excited for our linebackers and corners next year with all the experience they have. We will miss Sims at safety but I think we will get some young athletic guys to pick up the slack left by Sims and MOC. If we can add a couple of JUCOs to the defensive line with Nelson coming off the scout team, I think we have a reason to be cautiously optimistic about next year's defense.
