    Easy to blame Oline

They didn't play well at all. BUT Tom Herman didn't help them out either. Colorado was stacking the box and bringing pressure. We never threw a screen pass (minus the obvious one on 3rd and 20) and we never threw the ball down field. Despite what people think, you can throw the ball down field on a quick three step drop. A fade pass or a seam route to Franklin. Neither need very much time to have happen

When a defense is coming at you as much as Colorados was coming at us yesterday, you have to call plays that soften up the defense a bit. Even if it is an incomplete pass, the threat that you will actually throw down field can be enough to open up some runs and give Arnaud some more time.

Hell, even a swing pass to Arob would make the linebacker have to stay at home. Just a horrible offensive gameplan by Herman and even worse that he didn't make any adjustments to what the Colorado defense was doing

The last pass of substance we through downfield hit a Husker in the numbers. I say this cuz I think Tom H is afraid to gameplan as you suggest with the personnel we currently have. I could be wrong.

We threw fade passes to the back shoulder to Jake Williams. That is a quick play that is hard to guard. That was the last pass that we did against Nebraska as well.

We threw swing passes and wheel routes to Arob against Nebraska.

It seems that Tom needs to get smarter on his playcalling. Trying to beat your head against the wall to burn time is not working. 228 yards against CU is not cutting it. Missouri will eat us up if we do not become innovative again.

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

A showing as bad as yesterday's is eveyone's fault. Nothing was done well yesterday. Coaches, players, gameplan, emotion, concentration...everything was poor and there is plenty of room to go around.

It happens a lot though, emotional game followed by a terrible showing on the road to an inferior opponet that has nothing to lose. Happens every week around college football. Was hoping we could be the exception to the rule this week, but didn't work out. Hopefully we can bounce back and figure out a way to slow Missouri down, we haven't been able to stop their offense for a long time now.

I agree with what you guys are saying. I'm suprised we didn't see any drag/slant routes across the middle or any plays to get rid of the ball sooner. Maybe we were and it just wasn't open.

THIS. I understand he doesn't his kind of players to run his system but adjust to what you got. For me, he's been easily the most frustrating part of the season.

If you adjust it every year, you never get to your system. You're just changing what you're trying to teach every year.

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

    Let's see:

    Virtually no running game
QBs sacked 10th times and hurried and hit all day otherwise.

Perhaps it's not ALL the O-line's fault, but I really don't get the "it's easy to blame the O-line" bit - they were a MAJOR problem.

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

I can think of at least 3 times we threw the ball downfield. I can also think of at least 1 screencall for ARob.

OLine was a bigger problem than Herman's calls yesterday. If you want to gripe about coaching, I'd gripe about not bringing pressure against Hawkins and allowing him to "eat popcorn" back there.

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

I am not trying to throw Tom H. under the bus, but they were stacking the box a lot. I thought that we should have passed the ball more. As you can see, ISU mainly passed on their first score and it was successful:

Arnaud pass Lenz 6yds (ISU 24)
    Arnaud rush 5yds (ISU 29)
Arnaud pass Franklin 27yds (Colo. 44)
    Johnson rush 3yds (Colo. 41)
Arnaud pass Williams 7yds (Colo. 34)
    Arnaud rush 0yds (Colo. 34)
    Alexander rush 6yds (Colo. 28)
Arnaud pass Franklin 11yds (Colo. 8 facemask penalty)
    Alenxander rush 8yds

We knew their secondary was weak due to injuries why not go after the weakest link?

    Name them.

1 screen pass was on 3rd and 20. Nothing creative about that
1 downfield pass was to Collin Franklin on a broken play. Not a play call

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

I'm sorry but if you give up that many sacks it goes back to the offensive coordinator! The Oline is to blame too, sure. But there are 5 lineman and if they are blitzing 7 it doesn't add up, which can be fine but we have to call plays to take advantage of it. We did not. So what ended up happening was a sack, and it's easy to just sit there and blame the line. But it's not that easy

    Re: Easy to blame Oline

Herman's offense has been very prone to not stretching the field enough in the passing game. Yesterday was no exception. That's been my major problem with him. I understand he and Rhoads obviously don't trust Arnaud and the personnel in general, but man, sometimes you gotta take chances. The play calling looks like they are trying to avoid mistakes at all costs sometimes. You can't play that way unless you're head and shoulders better than the other team. Clearly, that won't happen too much with us right now.

I don't know whether you were paying attention to the game yesterday afternoon or not, but if AA held onto the ball for longer than a 3 count he got flattened. It's kind of impossible to attack the weakest link by going downfield when the O-line doesn't allow the QB to stay upright long enough to allow the WRs to get downfield.
