Good Big 10 Network vs. Medicom article

    DesMoinesRegister.com

    My favorite part:
Klatt even had a special e-mail distributed Wednesday afternoon to Iowa Hawkeye ticket purchasers and other supporters urging them to vote in an online poll sponsored by The Cedar Rapids Gazette. That poll asked whether the network should be placed on Mediacom’s expanded basic tier.

“I invite you to cast a vote in favor of Mediacom placing the Big Ten Network on the basic level of service it makes available to its customers in the state of Iowa,” Klatt said.

Wednesday afternoon, the poll showed there was about as much support for putting the network on basic as there was recently for central Iowa’s Project Destiny vote. More than 82 percent opposed it.

Klatt said he wrote the e-mail after voting in the Gazette poll and seeing the early results. He said that his e-mail to rally supporters was justified, though “I have problems with online polls.”

“They aren’t scientific or accurate, but there is another side to this argument and we believe we have the strong evidence that Big Ten sports is important in Iowa and that has to be recognized,” Klatt said, adding that 20 smaller Iowa cable distributors already have agreed to the network’s terms.
How does everyone think this will end up? Who will cave? My guess would be the B10 Network would cave before Mediacom. Hardcore Iowa fans will be the only ones really lobbying for it...my guess is that the rest of Iowa is opposed to it or doesn't really care.

Mediacom isn't going to cave. They have to provide programming that appeals to their entire user base, a large percentage of which could give a flying leap about sports in general, let alone Big 10 Ultimate Frisbee tourneys.

I look at it this way. Mediacom could drop their Mediacom Mainstreet, the Jewelry Channel, and even Versus, and that would more than cover the cost of the BTN. There really is no denying that the BTN would get better ratings than those stations combined.

I think this is just another case of Mediacom being stubborn.

Can you give me some numbers that support your statement? I know you think everyone in the world cares about the Big 10, but I could give a flying leap along with a large percentage of the population.

In any case, I don't really care. I am on Directv because I despise cable. If Big 10 fans are such great fans they will give up a carton of GPC Menthols and a case of PBR for a month to cover the cost.

Do you have any evidence to support that claim, or are you just assuming?

Besides, why would mediacom drop other channels to add the BTN when only a select percentage of Iowa's population would ever watch it? They can simply add it to their sports package and charge the people who want it extra. win for mediacom/win for non-Iowa fans.

So is mediacom being stubborn, or are Hawk fans forgetting they're not the center of the universe? :)

If Mediacom drops Versus, their subscribers won't be able to watch the ISU/Iowa game this fall.

This makes perfect sense to me. Let the people who actually WANT it, PAY for it! How hard is that for the BTN to understand that 80%+ don't care about their channel?

If BTN wants to succeed, I think they'll blink and agree to the digital tier. The Digital tier is becoming more and more common and eventually, you'll see analog cable go away and everything will be digital, it's already happened in Chicago. Going all digital allows more bandwith space for HD and VOD (Video on Demand) content.

You'd better not be insinuating that PBR is anything but the nectar of the gods!!

Marty and Miller just got done ripping the president of the lil 11 network(i think president). It was great! Its not just Iowa fans that have a huge sense of entitlement, its the whole league. I have DirecTv, but i really hope Mediacom passes on the bigten network. Does anyone even care if your not a fan of the 11 losers?

That was great, Marty and Miller were killing him, he had no response to the tough questions and some other (rediculous) questions just got him squirming and defensive... Good Job outta you Marty and Miller
