    Photography in DSM

    Question for ISUFan22, Wesely, etc.:

Does anyone know of a photography class in DSM for beginners? We have started a family and my wife is interested in taking some classes. Nothing too advanced, just something nice that I can give for a Christmas present. I was thinking it would be a class that might be each week for a month or something. I really don't know, just looking for some direction.

    TIA.

You might want to check out classes at DMACC, especially if you just invested in a digital SLR.

    Sam,

We are starting something like this. We held an "intermediate" class for SLR owners this fall. We plan to have advanced classes as well as our 12 week (it may be shorter or longer) "boot camp" that will involve everything from what camera to buy to lighting to post processing.

In addition, we plan to introduce a class for "point-and-shoot" owners that will also include camera recommendations and then a follow up on how to use it.

We do not have these scheduled yet but do plan to start them in the spring - this winter we will be planning them out, etc. Contact us via our site, we will have your info and you'll be in our mailing list for these. I'll talk to my business partner about doing a gift cert. for you that you can give to her for Christmas.

I'll preface this by saying I do not think the DMACC route is bad at all. It is my understanding the photography instructor(s) that were there in the past were much better than the current, however.

Also, we have taught a few that took some classes from DMACC. I don't know anyone that has come out of them and been happy with what they have learned, when compared to other options available (not just referring to our classes).

    Re: Photography in DSM

A really good course for someone who is just beginning and wants to learn about Digital SLR cameras is through Des Moines Public Schools and it is very inexpensive. It is a great course for beginners, because they walk through everything and then you actually go out and take photos to use the things that you just learned in the classroom. I took this class and was pretty impressed with it.

Seems kind of limiting unless you're interested only in taking pictures of crosses, country churches, or trying to get a candid photo of JC himself?

On a more serious note, I believe the Des Moines Art Center offers classes.
