    Thoughts on the Nebby 'Pistol'

I was at the game, and may have overlooked out defensive schemes, but it seemed that the defense was still in pass coverage when Nebby had no QB on the field.

I think we changed up alittle after a a series or two, but just curious if anyone else saw/thought this? Our corners were and have been doing a great job as of late, so I thought we should have been in single man coverage, and put another guy in the box, to defend the pistol. I'd be curious to see Nebs play call list for those couple series'.

Along this same thought, when they did have CodyG spread as a WR, isn't the defense allowed to check a receiver off the LOS?

It was impressive. #22 is a great runner, great team motivator and lead the team well.
I kinda felt bad for the QB .... each time he ran out wide, it was a bit slower and his head looking down a bit more with each run.

That formation and #22 running won the game for them. Honestly, I liked the play calling as much as I hated it.

Just an FYI I think you're confusing the Pistol with the Wildcat. In the Pistol the QB is in shot gun formation and the back lines up directly behind the QB.

Burkhead ran those reads great, he really impressed me. I agree with the post above, you had to feel for Cody Green a bit. Everytime they lined up in that formation was like a smack in the face. I mean this guy was a fairly highly touted 4* recruit and now he has a HB taking snaps from him.

They ran several plays out of "Wildcat" personell but "Pistol" formation.

Oops, yep, sorry. But as effective as it was, we almost defended it like it was the 'pistol'.

    My thoughts?

Well, it is Nebraska so I'm not surprised their players brought pistols into the stadium.

(Sorry, I had to say it!)

    Yeah TOAST!!!

Re: Thoughts on the Nebby 'Pistol'

You had a guy in the box the entire game so there was no need to adjust to the pistol. Nebraska showed no signs of actually being able to pass the ball. They only completed 7 passes for 79 yards and only threw 12 passes. On the other hand they ran the ball 54 times.

Re: Thoughts on the Nebby 'Pistol'

I know they have run it some this season, but with Martinez/Lee out it had to be the most they have run it. Was generally very effective.

I think if they mix that in even more with Martinez back, they're quite dangerous. Especially if one of those backs can throw the football. With Martinez being so athletic, he's a weapon split out too.

Re: Thoughts on the Nebby 'Pistol'

They have a pretty soft schedule left. Against KU and CU they will be able to do what they want, but against A&M Martinez is going to have to get healthy and they are going to have to be able to throw downfield some. The part that sucks is they can lose that game and they will still win the North. My only hope is the South champ beats them, but whoever that will be it looks like it will be the worst South Champ in a decade.
