    Jeff Woody

Did Jeff Woody get any carries after his first quarter fumble?

    Re: Jeff Woody

No, I don't think anyone but Arob and AA carried the ball after that. Kind of a bummer, Woody's fumble was really costly and he made the wrong read on the play but the ball was stripped on a very nice play by the defender. I would have liked to have seen both Johnson and Woody give Arob a blow at some point.

    Re: Jeff Woody

ARob is such a great receiver that he needed to be in the game to help AA. The game had so many timeouts, stoppages, and back and forths, and cooler weather that I doubt anyone was gassed yesterday. That may be different at Co0lorado.

I think the Boulder forecast is in the high 30's for game time.

    Re: Jeff Woody

I was surprised not to see Johnson get a few carries, especially after the spark his kick return provided in the second half. ARob wasn't playing poorly by any stretch, but a play or two for an amped up Johnson seemed like it would have been well timed.

For Woody, that was a mistake he is simply not allowed to make. It was a painful turnover, so the ball was placed in more steady hands.

    Re: Jeff Woody

That was a tough fumble to give up because we were going to put up points on the drive. That being said, in future games down the road Woody will get an extra yard or two and help sustain drives. He's a good mix to have in the backfield.

    Re: Jeff Woody

A-Rob isn't immune to fumbles. I think he fumbled twice after Woody's fumble, we were just fortunate enough to recover them. Where was Shontrelle Johnson? Is he nicked up? He didn't have a single carry, and it would have been nice to have him out there to give kNU something else to think about, especially when we insisted on trying to run A-Rob up the middle on nearly every first down.

    Re: Jeff Woody

Thanks. I didn't recall him going back in, and agree with the coaches for sitting him for that. So many people are calling out our holder for a bad pass that was intercepted that cost us the 2 points that we needed to win, or Arnaud for his pick 6, or Mahoney for missing two field goals, or our defense for giving up the long TD run in OT, but forgetting Woody's costly turnover in the first quarter that at a minimum cost us a field goal attempt and which led to a Nebraska touchdown. Of the three turnovers that we had, this one was the least excusable since I can understand the wind affecting throws, but no excuse for carrying the ball with one hand away from your body when running between the tackles with contact impending. It was a mistake, one that he'll learn from, but although it didn't directly cost us the game, it did factor into the outcome.

Leading up to the game, everyone said that the key to a Cyclone victory was to be +2 or +3 in turnover differential. We were -1. We were damn lucky to even be in this game with a chance to win in the 4th quarter and again in OT. Being -1 in the turnover differential had more to do with this ending up a loss than the coaches decisions at the end of regulation. All goes back to players executing. The team that makes the fewest mistakes usually wins.

So had ARob lost the ball he fumbled in the red zone, should he too not have touched the ball again?

Every back is going to have his fumbles from time to time. What I noticed about Woody's fumble is that he was carrying the ball away from his body while making a run between the tackles. He's a power runner who's expected to go right at the defense, and he should have been carrying the ball tighter. Given the type of runner he is and his yards per carry, Woody is expected to be more sure handed. A-Rob and Shontrelle get a bit more leeway with how they hold the ball because they give us more production.

No. You stick with ARob because he's your senior leader who fumbled fighting for yardage at the end of a big gain, and he more than makes up for any turnover he commits. Woody fumbled because he was carrying the ball away from his body when running between the tackles. It's the kind of mistake that a freshman makes. He'll bounce back from this and be a better player because of it.

Woody had his opportunity and blew it. A-ROb is the starter, so its different. If johnson would have fumbled instead of woody, im guessing he wouldnt have seen another down either.

    Re: Jeff Woody

Seems like Jeff has a bit of trouble on the read option at times. Like he wants to keep it when AA is trying to pull it out. Don't think that's what happened on this play, but I'm sure he'll get his carries.

There was plenty of what ifs in that game, like what if AA didn't throw that pick six. But i think a key part of the game was when woody fumbled to think we would have at least got 3 points out of it.
