    Best loss ever?

Alright, I feel the pain of Clones fans everywhere. For the first 10 seconds after the failed 2 point conversion I was screaming at the TV and shaking my first. But then I stopped..thought about it....and I think that could be the best sports loss I've seen...EVER....

    1. Statistically we had no business being in that game. With our record vs. ranked opponents this year, Nebraska coming off an embarrassing loss to us last year, and what our schedule looked like.....we should be DAMN proud of our team for standing Toe to Toe Nebraska.

    2. This team proves week in and week out that it is SCRAPPY. They stood toe to toe and exchanged blows with Nebraska when any previous Cyclone team would have crumbled after Nebraska went up by 2 scores.

    3. The risk/reward of going for that play was too high not to take it. The W in this game would have been HUGE as far as bowls and recruiting go. Paul Rhoads did what I love best in a coach...he played to win. Kept his foot on the gas and went for it. Losing this game is fairly negligible as far as bowls go...we're right where we expected to be...going to Colorado with a shot becoming bowl eligible and a game against Missouri at home.

    4. That play was THERE. The play WAS the right call, the execution wasn't there. Paul Rhoads was one well executed play from beating a ranked Nebraska in the last game they may play against each other.

    5. We lost on our OWN terms. Iowa state didn't get out run, out passed, or out muscled. Iowa State lost because they were going for it all. There is NO shame in going for that. Ballsy calls (50+ yard FG shots) are what kept us in that game. It's part of the Iowa State culture now..and it's a good thing.

I can't quit smiling right now. Incredible game by OUR team.

    Congratulations Cyclones!

    Moral victory? Not so much

Respect that we earned while trying to build up a program? Absolutely.

    Re: Best loss ever?

If you say rhoads played to win that game i think its false. He would have played to win if he would have taken at least one shot in regulation to end the game. Your special teams is for kicks not throwing passes. Dumb call and I would never agree with it ever

    Re: Best loss ever?

This thread is pathetic and embarassing. I guess I'm in the minority which surprises me, but I'm not happy at all. ISU should have won this game and again found a way to lose. There are certainly positives, but I think if Nebraska has Martinez, we probably get rolled. Great effort by our guys though and while I would have kicked the extra point, I don't fault Rhoads for trying the fake. It was wide open.

    Re: Best loss ever?

Sorry, too many screw ups to be a great loss. Excited we were able to get back in the game, but its not a great game when you have a pick-6, fumble, and two HUGE missed field goals. It was a great game no doubt, but that throw has to be made in the end zone. Maybe I'm am still in rage/shock of the game, but I wish we would have just manned up and went for two. Obviously my opinion would be different had we converted.

    Re: Best loss ever?

I can't believe people thought we should have gone for the win in regulation. Have you watched Austen Arnaud at all during his career? From drive to drive, you have no clue what you're going to get. Kneeling was absolutely the right call.

    Re: Best loss ever?

Moral victories don't mean a lot when you're a pass away from a win over a #7 team you're never going to play again and becoming bowl eligible.

That being said, I don't think there is such a thing as a "good loss." Only ones that look better in comparison to others.

best loss ever? I don't get that logic. This loss is devastating IMO. This ranks right up there with Missouri in 04 in my eyes.

    Re: Best loss ever?

While this game certainly stirs up the "Woulda couldas" I am with the OP. I have never been prouder of our team. I do feel a bit that we beat ourselves with those interceptions but honestly, I've never been prouder to be a cyclone fan. Go rewatch that fake PAT on ESPN's recap. You can see the wind take it, and even the announcers said it was a good call.
I certainly fall a bit into the sad because it's a loss and I was there and I thought that we were going to be rushing the field with a win over a top 10 team and I was absolutely excited.
However, I feel this is a turning point in our program. Yes we lost, but to hear students understanding that we can compete with top 10 programs because our coach is phenomonal, I can't wait to see what happens when he gets the guys that fit his schemes.
Any fusker fan I ran into touting that win got rebuttled hard on my way home. I give Nebraska credit for the win, but as far as I am concerned, we proved that we can and will compete with any team.

    Re: Best loss ever?

Now I understand completely what Danny Mac used to say about "No moral victories". Unlike his program, CPR's is at the stage where it doesn't need them.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)
