ESPN to pay Texas $12 mil a year for Longhorn sports

Wow. ESPN has guaranteed Texas $12 mil a year, starting next fall, to carry the Longhorn Network on its cable systems. This is on top of Texas' share of Big 12 TV revenues.

"The new agreement between Texas and ESPN for the Longhorn Network includes a $10 million payment up front, sources said. It also would make Texas the top TV revenue-producing school in the country, earning close to $30 million next year in TV revenue and more than $32 million beginning in 2012-13, sources said."

What kind of stuff would be included in this network? Does it lessen the value of the overall Big XII contract?

Does the competitor get a payout if the game is broadcast on the Longhorn network?

How does that country song go - "It's all about me". This for the team that lost to Baylor and ISU, I guess they don't want that to happen again.

I'm sure ESPN will remain completely unbiased despite it being in their best interest for texas to do well..

So, is this like the SEC's deal with ESPN or something similar to that?

At least we won't have to worry about them jumping ship. Hopefully the Big XII can get a big TV contract and keep everyone else happy.

Think we can use this to lure in Notre Dame?

This isn't even the rich getting richer, it's gold plated flushing handles on toilets at the cross-country location instead of normal ones. Not really sure how more money or exposure really is going to help them outside of the pure greed aspect.

Honestly this really doesn't concern me. Texas already had more money than anybody else. Now they just have more more money than anybody else.

I just hope the Big 12 TV package is enough to make us more competitive with other conferences.

I'm surprised more teams are not joining the league if they can start a new network.
