    Core Graphic Design Program?

So is anyone currently in this? If so I'm looking for you to answer some questions for me. Since my advisor said that I had to take 16 credits in order to submit my portfolio by summer I have to take all the core classes I was wondering the following:

1.) How hard are the core classes that you are taking currently?
2.) Would you reccomend taking all 4 of the core courses at once (note that I dont have to take any general eds).
3.) What are some of the projects that you do?
4.) Are there any huge tests? Or is it just mainly drawing?
5.) Have any of you taken all 4 core design programs in 1 semester?

    Thanks in advance.

Don't take DSN 102 and DSN 131 in the same semester. You will never want to step foot in the COD building again if you do that. DSN 131 can be a hard class if you have Cunnally.

It's possible to take 102 and 131 in the same semester, but don't count on having a social life.

Can you guys give me more detail? I don't plan on having much of a social life next semester, but that doesnt bother me much.

Can you tell me some of the projects and what the classes are about?

If you have drawn before it starts out slowish you just have to put time in as the drawings are all 18x24. 102 you have a postcard project which is creating a collage and there is a couple smaller assignments with it. Then you get to make something as realistic as possible out of paper and then make a weird sculpture out of the parts you created. Then the doorway project is a group thing trying to make a unique doorway experience using limited supplies. The 2nd project was probably the most time consuming and tedious, and the doorway was just stressful getting people together. This was 05-06 for me so it might have changed slightly.

Alright cool thanks for some info, how about the other classes any info on those?

How do you enjoy the core?

What are you going into after doing the core?

I've never drawn (besides by myself) before.

    Re: Core Graphic Design Program?

DSN S 183 (i think) is just lecture its not too bad. I had Palermo and didn't do well, i really disliked him, then did much better the second time. Cunnally you will learn a lot but the tests are tedious.

The only other first year stuff i remeber is taking trig and physics 111 (i originally wanted to go for arch.)

I graduated in Integrated Studio Arts in May, i didn't really hit my stride till i started taking computer animation classes. I just always new art was going to be better than anything else for me.

    Re: Core Graphic Design Program?

Thanks for the insight man, it helps a lot. I wanted to know what I was getting myself into. Since the meeting with my AA was about 3 minutes long, she didnt get into a lot of depth.

So what do you do for a living right now?

Cunnally was a hilarious teacher when I was there (97-01) I had him for every art history class I ever took in Ames except for graphic design history. I have no problem remembering names/dates and it was interesting for me so I didn't struggle as much as some others, but I know most people would dread preparing for his tests.

The thing that made his class so entertaining was he would seem to slip some sexual innuendo into every single work of art or industrial design we covered. A piston in the first combustion engines couldn't just be a piston, it had to represent sexual thrusting in and out. It was really quite hilarious, especially with his very unique/odd voice. Sometimes he was dead on with these remarks, other time he had to just be messing around.

I really liked his classes, he can seem a little difficult to approach but if you actually talk to him he was a great guy to talk with too.
