CN interview with Strength Coach Ken Sheppard

    LINK

I don't know about you guys, but I really got pumped reading this interview. It's really cool to hear our guys getting stronger AND faster under his tutelage. Was also interesting to read that the new "administration" re-vamped the weight room and changed the entire philosophy of strength & conditioning...

This was a fantastic interview. Probably the best piece I've ever read on a cyclone site.

Frankly, I'm shocked the old S&C program used machines instead of freeweights.

The more and more I listen to what's coming out of Ames the more I think more than 6 wins is a reality (and I've though 6 was a reality since day 1 of the Chizik era).

I doubt that. No football conditioning program uses many machines. Only if you are rehabbing. It is all barbells and explosive moves like cleans.

I've been in the weight room before the new staff came on board. There were more than enough free weights in there.

    Read the interview...

Shepperad said himself it was all machines under the old regime. He got rid of the machines and brought free weights in...

They might have had some machines, but I just doubt it was an all machine program. ISU had a national strength coach of the year running the thing. Heck even personal trainers at the gym do not use machines, even they know it does not work as well. Strength 101 says get barbells and lift heavy things to get strong.

    That's not what was said...

CN: Now, one of the comments made during spring game by a long-time observer of the program was that the free weights have replaced the machines . . .

    KS: Yes.

CN: And he was saying how he really was pleased with that because it forces guys who are lifting to compensate for some of their weaknesses in terms of imbalance and stuff. Explain why you made that move and what that represents in terms of developing strength of athletes.

KS: Well, my philosophy is explosive power, and a progressive overload type training. And that is forcing the body to work under heavy loads, and you can’t do that on a machine, because a machine keeps you pretty much in a line that it’s designed to keep you in. And you’re not in a straight line, per se, or in a fixed position on the football field. So we don’t train in that manner here in the weight room. In explosive power we move the weight as fast as possible. We do have machines here, but they’re mainly used for . . . maybe a rehab purpose or an isolation, but when we get ready to do our core work, machines are pretty much obsolete as far as that is concerned.
So to clarify, the machines that were there - have mostly been replaced by free weights.

Again, I saw the room with my own two eyes over a year ago and there was no shortage of free weights. The new staff is just putting more of a emphasis on free weights - which is very good.

Re: CN interview with Strength Coach Ken Sheppard

I'm just glad the guys are getting faster too... Seemed like Getty had too much of an emphasis on size and not necessarily speed and quickness... I remember an interview with him before Enis's last year, he was so happy about how big Enis had gotten, failed to mention that he lost a step of speed to do it... I can't remember how many times he got caught from behind that year but it was alot...

Re: CN interview with Strength Coach Ken Sheppard

im sure there WERE both, but KShep obviously indicates that the machines were what was used in the lifting program.

on a different note, did anyone else read the publishers note at the bottom of the interview?
"Publisher's note: Remember that beginning August 4th all of our similar outstanding content will be exclusive for premium subscribers only."
Anyone think this is linked to the announcement that Jeremy is going to be making any time now? Or has this been there and I just never noticed it?

Best line of the interview IMO:

Absolutely. My thing, and I preach to them all time, is we will perform in the fourth quarter like we perform in the first quarter.
    Damn that would be nice.
