    Must read about conference expansion....

Frank the Tank’s Big East Expansion FAQ FRANK THE TANK’S SLANT

Very good take on how the Big East looking to expand won't really do much for them, and how the Big 12 is likely very stable. Also looks at how the Pac-10 didn't really gain much (which we kind of knew).

It's very Big East-centric, but it goes a LONG way towards trying to understand a lot of the factors involved.

To that end, this guy's take on the new Longhorn Network is pretty interesting:

    http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/20...rlay-10292010/

It's not anything that would affect us at all, and it looks like the risk that UT would assume would be quite limited.

In fact, if the value of the Longhorn network is really going to be only $3 million per year, then it’s obvious to me that this network had absolutely nothing to do with (1) the near-collapse of the Big 12, (2) the ultimate rejection by Texas of the Pac-16 proposal or (3) Texas refusing to consider to join the equal revenue sharing leagues of the Big Ten and SEC, both of which would’ve paid a heck of a lot more with a lot less heartburn. As dysfunctional as the Big 12 was and still is, an entire league was not going to break up over a $3 million TV package.
He goes on to paint the the picture that the Big 12 survived really just because they wanted it to.

The Big East's problem is not just that they lost three teams to the ACC, but also that they lost Penn State to the Big Ten before Big East football even formed. A Big East or "eastern football" conference with Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College, Connecticut, Temple, Miami, and Virginia Tech would be competitive in TV contracts and on the field.

Re: Must read about conference expansion....

I thought that the guy made some pretty good points. Kind of explains why the Big 12 is fairly stable right now. As far as the Big East goes, I hadn't thought of a FB-only addition, but it makes perfect sense...both football-wise and travel-wise for TCU and it doesn't affect the overall Big East as a MBB conference.

I also agree with the point about the Big 10. Miller and Deace were salivating over all the money the Big 11 was going to make by adding Rutgers, etc. Frank is right that adding Rutgers does NOT automatically give you the NYC cable market...far from it. Adding Rutgers and Syracuse BOTH does not do that. Think NYC residents are going to pay $.70 a month to watch those teams? No, they definitely are not. They may allow the Big 11 to ask for more from ABC/ESPN, but not enough to offset what they would take from the conference. It's likely (at least to me) that the Big 11 is done for now unless they can get ND or UT. Or unless things outside (Pac 10, ACC, SEC) start trending toward super conferences.

Now, if the Big 10 wanted to push things toward super conferences in an attempt to get ND to commit, even at the expense of present budgets, then I could see them moving. They could sell it as taking a temporary reduction in payouts for a possible bigger payout down the line. Doesn't seem all that likely, though.
