Need Geek Help Again: Not Enough Disk Space

I got a new pc a couple weeks ago. Last night I went to rip backups of some home video DVDs onto my hard drive for archiving purposes. The DVD is under 5gb and my hard drive has over 250gb of available space. I got an error message that there was not enough disk space. WTF? Why is this happening? I'm pretty sure 5 is still less than 250 unless something has changed.

another question is is it an external drive with fat32 format? or, I guess, is your internal fat32?

Re: Need Geek Help Again: Not Enough Disk Space

I had this problem with Microsoft Movie Maker last week while trying to reduce the size of a movie. I had plenty of disk space but it kept giving me that error. I think I ended up rebooting to clear it up. Not exactly sure what was causing it but the reboot did the trick.

Re: Need Geek Help Again: Not Enough Disk Space

I'd recommend doing a search on your whole c drive. Under criteria choose "huge" and make sure it looks in all locations. I bet you quickly find the problem.

That was my first thought. FAT32 limits individual files to 4 GB max. I think DVDs usually break up data into files smaller than that, but depending on how the DVD was created maybe there are files greater than 4 GB. If so, the hard drive needs to be converted to NTFS.

I don't think so, but I'll check. This is the same external drive I was using on my old computer and I've got disc images as large as 7gb saved on there already.

PS: If this is the deal, can you convert a drive from FAT32 to NTFS without erasing everything off it?

I am pretty sure you need to completely format the drive to convert from fat32 to ntfs.

I'm fairly certain it is already NTFS as it is a fairly new (within last two years) drive. But I'll check.
